History
Initial years
The company was founded in 1987 as McAfee Associates, named for its founder John McAfee, who resigned from the company in 1994. McAfee was founded in the state of Delaware in 1992. Network Associates was formed in 1997 as a merger of McAfee Associates, Public Network, PGP Corporation and Helix Software.
The company was restructured in 2004, starting with sales of Magic Solutions for Remedy, a subsidiary of BMC Software at the beginning of the year. In mid 2004, the company sold its Sniffer Technologies business to a venture-backed venture company called Network General (the same name as the original owner of Sniffer Technologies), and changed its name back to McAfee to reflect its focus on security-related technologies..
Open source
Among other companies purchased and sold by McAfee is the Trusted Information System, which developed the Firewall Toolkit, the free software foundation for the commercial Gauntlet Firewall, which was then sold to Secure Computing Corporation.
McAfee, as a result of the brief ownership of the TIS/NAI Labs Lab/Network Associates Laboratories/McAfee Research, is very influential in the world of Open Source software, as it produces parts of the Linux, FreeBSD and Darwin operating systems, and develops part of the software server name BIND and SNMP version 3.
Encryption technology
McAfee has acquired the Calgary, Alberta, Canada-based FSA company that helps companies diversify their security offerings from only client-based antivirus software by bringing to their own network and desktop encryption technology.
The FSA team also oversaw the creation of a number of other leading technologies at the time, including firewalls, file encryption, and public key infrastructure product lines. While these product lines have their respective successes including PowerBroker (written by Dean Huxley and Dan Freedman and now sold by BeyondTrust), the growth of antivirus devices has always surpassed the growth of other security product lines. It's fair to say that McAfee is still famous for its anti-virus and anti-spam products.
Acquisition by Intel
On August 19, 2010, Intel announced that it would buy McAfee for $ 48 per share in a $ 7.68 billion deal.
On January 6, 2014, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced during the Consumer Electronics Show the change of name from McAfee Security to Intel Security. The company's red shield logo will remain, with the company continuing to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel. John McAfee, who no longer has any involvement in the company, expressed his pleasure in his name no longer associated with the software. "I am now ever grateful to Intel for relieving me of this bad relationship with the worst software on the planet, these are not my words, but the words of millions of angry users." However, by 2016, the product still uses the name McAfee.
The company spun back from Intel on April 4, 2017.
