The Edge of Seventeen is a teenage American comedy drama written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, and Haley Lu Richardson. The subject of photography begins on October 21, 2015, in Vancouver and ends on December 3, 2015.
The film premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, 2016, and was theatricalally released on 18 November 2016 by STXfilms. It received positive reviews, with a critically acclaimed Steinfeld performance, and earned over $ 18 million.

Plot
In October 2015, Nadine Franklin (Hailee Steinfeld), a high school student in the suburbs of Portland, admitted to his school teacher, Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) that he plans to commit suicide. Threats and responses illustrate their unique relationship.
Nadine recounts her life thus far: At the age of seven, the distinction between Nadine and her more popular brother Darian (Blake Jenner) is clear. Nadine has an explosive relationship with her very dramatic mother and is aware of the image of Mona (Kyra Sedgwick) who seems to love her brother, while Nadine's father, Tom (Eric Keenleyside) is the only immediate member close to him. At the age of 13, Nadine is supported by her relationship with her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) and her father. Nadine's father suffered a fatal heart attack while driving. As a result of his father's death, Nadine's life changed drastically. Until when Nadine was 17 years old, Krista was the only "good part" of her life.
One night at home, Nadine and Krista were drunk, while Darian held a pool party. Nadine fell asleep and woke up to find Krista in bed with the naked Darian. Krista tried to fix things, but Nadine was tortured because her friend was with her brother. Krista and Darian think to break it, but eventually she asks her to be his girlfriend. Nadine feels hopelessly alone and looks for her classmate, Erwin Kim (Hayden Szeto), who likes her. She finds that, despite her awkwardness, she has a good sense of humor. But Nadine is interested in an older student, Nick Mossman (Alexander Calvert), whom he only meets once.
Later, Darian invites Krista to a house party, which forces Nadine to join them. When they arrived, Krista was introduced to another student, who invited Krista and Darian to play beer pong, leaving Nadine to her own device. After several unsuccessful conversations with other people at the party, Nadine went outside and sat on the veranda bench with a partying person, who told how low Nadine was compared to her popular and athletic brother. This conversation prompted Nadine to leave the party without Krista or Darian. Nadine calls Erwin and asks if he wants to go with him to the amusement park. There he tried to kiss her but turned into a comedy awkwardness. At the end of the night, Nadine tells him that she's a great guy.
Krista faced Nadine for ignoring her the night before, so Nadine made her choose between her and Darian. Krista did not want to vote, and Nadine angrily told Krista that their friendship was over.
At school, Mr. Bruner has been Nadine's immediate assistant for support. She let him vent his anger on him, but afterwards, as a way to make him guilty, reveals that he is his favorite pupil. Erwin and Nadine spent the night in her hot spring pool. Although Erwin is wealthy, his parents do business abroad for most of the year; he has become lonely. Nadine learned that she is an animated filmmaker and accepted her invitation to their short film festival.
One morning when Mona pushes Nadine to school, they have an argument that causes Mona to take her to work with her. At work, Nadine quarreled with her mother about her father. Nadine stole Mona's keys and left. In the warmth of the moment, he wrote sexually explicit text to Nick but decided not to send it. Nevertheless, he accidentally hit "send" and embarrassed.
The narration turned to when Nadine told Mr. Bruner that he was about to commit suicide, and he tried to keep Nadine calm about the text he was sending. He received a text from Nick, asked him to hang out that evening, pulling Nadine. Mona calls Darian, admitting that Nadine is missing and that she is dependent on her son as a father figure since Tom died. Darian goes looking for Nadine. During their date, Nick repeatedly tries to have sex with Nadine in his car, after interpreting the text as a proposition, while he wants a romantic date. Embarrassed and sad, Nadine fled and summoned Mr. Bruner while waiting at the donut shop, who drove him to his house, where they waited with his wife and baby until Darian arrived. Darian confesses to Nadine that although her life seemed perfect, she has been secretly suffering from the pressure of having to take care of the family since their father died. Darian confesses that she feels trapped and does not apply to distant colleges, and the only person who helps her smile is Krista. But that was also a problem, because Nadine was angry because Krista was with her. Nadine confessed to her brother that she had been dealing with self-hatred, intensified by envy for her. They hugged and their enmity ended.
Nadine prepared herself for the school film festival. Nadine walks down on the way out and is greeted by Darian and Krista. Both girls were at peace and agreed to follow later. Mona is afraid that Nadine has run away. Realizing that her mother was worried, Nadine sent a message to him that she survived. Mona decides to believe her words. The animated film Erwin is the story of a green alien boy who fell in love with a girl in high school, but was rejected by him. Realizing the metaphor, Nadine apologizes to Erwin for having so long accepted his love. Erwin was congratulated by his colleagues. When she introduced Nadine to them, she greeted them with a smile, finally opening herself to someone else.

Production
Writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig sends a copy of the screenplay to producer James L. Brooks, hoping Brooks will produce the film. Craig remembers, "I have written a special version of this movie, and have been a fan of Jim's crazy for years.He is a crazy person I took at the beginning! And that I never thought would actually work.But I sent him a script and he finally took the project. " The Edge of Seventeen is Craig's director debut. He also produced the film.
On August 4, 2015, Hailee Steinfeld was instrumental in the film to play the lead role, while Richard Sakai was also sworn in as a film producer. On September 24, 2015, Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick joined the cast, with Harrelson playing the role of high school teacher and Sedgwick as the mother of the main character. On October 6, 2015, Blake Jenner was cast in this film as Nadine's brother, a popular and handsome football player who began dating Nadine's close friend Krista. Hayden Szeto was cast in this film as Erwin Kim, a fervent classmate of Nadine, who fingered several attempts to win his affection through most of the stories. The Edge of Seventeen , distributed by STX Entertainment, was originally scheduled to be released on September 30, 2016, before being moved to 18 November. Stage 6 Film and Sony Pictures Releasing International handles some distribution rights to movies outside the United States.
