Plot

The story begins at a prison work site where Boots "Bootsie" McGaffey tries to help his old friend, Alvie Gibbs, escape by causing a diversion and leaving with a camouflaged camouflage vehicle. Curiously, Bootsie's effort was not necessary, as Alvie was scheduled to be released on parole the same week. Both friends roam the area, search for food and take cover while continuing to avoid the police.

Meanwhile, in the rich part of town, a six-year-old girl, named Savannah Driscoll, felt lonely and unwelcome by her prosperous parents. His father, Richard, is a candidate for the United States Senate and more concerned with his public image than his daughter. Feeling sad and motivated by the old episode of Our Gang , Savannah decided to run away during a trip to the park with his aunt and cousin, and left a note before he escaped. Unfortunately, a gust of wind blew his notes under his parents' bed, invisible.

Meanwhile, Alvie and Bootsie arrive at the park in an old vehicle they stole earlier. While the children play hide and seek, Savannah decides to hide in the back seat of the car, and Alvie and Boosty involuntarily go with him. After running away with a police officer, they pretend he is Bootsy's niece. They tried to get her back to the park, but she did not want to leave, and they decided to take care of her for a while.

After learning of missing Savannah, Richard and his wife, Joan, contacted the authorities. Believing Savannah was kidnapped, they also hired a private detective, Harland Dobbs. The police officers immediately collected evidence and eyewitness testimony and concluded that Savannah was kidnapped. However, eyewitnesses felt Savannah was not actually kidnapped, given the original surprise shown by Alvie and Bootsie. Joan hesitated to follow the abduction theory and disagreed with the way he proceeded. While wanting to appear tough on crime for the benefit of his Senator's campaign, Richard agrees to follow Dobbs's strategy.

The next day, after reading a newspaper article, Alvie discovered Savannah's identity and a $ 100,000 reward for his safe return. Because he and Bootsie are fugitives, he is not sure how they can take the prize. In the meantime, they do their best to keep Savannah and comfort them. Alvie tries to make a deal with the waiter/singer he meets at a local bar, to hand over Savannah and split his prize. He rejected her but befriended Alvie in the process.

Over the next few days, Alvie and Bootsie grow closer to Savannah, and he is happy to have them in his life. They play games, tell stories, and even go picnics together. While getting an ice cream, Alvie gave Savannah a free puppy. As Alvie continues to plan for prize money, Bootsie begins to have second thoughts and would rather give Savannah back without a prize. On the way back to their hideout, they were spotted by a local police officer, who told Dobbs. Dobbs, along with the team of officers, surrounded the hideout and tried to capture Alvie and Bootsie. After one wrong attack by one of the officers, Alvie realizes what's going on, and he and Bootsie bring the Savannah hostages to escape. Before they could leave, they were approached by the Driscoll Family priest, Father O'Hara, who was trying to be a peacemaker. Not wanting to make peace, Alvie ordered Father O'Hara to accompany them on their escape. Pastor O'Hara helped to ensure Savannah's security, provided that he would be dropped off at the closest wedding ceremony he was scheduled to do. The group used the marriage to continue their holiday, by switching vehicles and fleeing during the post-marriage procession. They are successful, and proceed to the previously visited resort area during their picnic day.

While at home waiting to hear from the alleged abductors, Richard was handed over to Savannah's abandoned notes, whose nanny had been found. Not wanting to create confusion or change his position, Richard burned the note and instructed the caregiver to keep the information between the two of them. He received a call from Father O'Hara, informing them of the whereabouts of the fugitives. Richard told Dobbs and his team, then went to the resort area with Joan. Upon arrival at the resort, Alvie and Father O'Hara traveled down the mountain to meet with Driscolls, to negotiate a safe return from Savannah. Richard convinces Alvie that they will not keep costs down as long as Savannah is returned. Alvie refuses the prize money he originally sought and agreed on terms. He and Father O'Hara went back to the mountain. Meanwhile, Bootsie and Savannah are waiting at the top of the mountain. After a while, Savannah takes her new puppy for a walk, but she pulls away from him, and she eventually disappears into the woods. Alvie and Father O'Hara arrive, and along with Bootsie, finds Savannah missing. Father O'Hara urged Alvie and Bootsie to leave while a clean holiday was still possible, but they refused and started looking for Savannah instead. Dobbs and his team arrived at the scene and surrounded the area. They easily catch Bootsie, then wait for Alvie who is still looking for Savannah. The Driscolls, too, arrived. Alvie finds Savannah, but then sees the officers making him surrounded. Before surrendering, he wanted to say goodbye to Savannah. She explains to him that the time with them is over, and although they have fun, they have to go home. Joan, against Richard's wishes, rushed to meet Alvie and Savannah as they approached. Father O'Hara showed his support and escorted Alvie into the custody of the officers. Fed up with the turn of events, Joan decides to take Savannah home and leave Richard. Alvie and Bootsie were arrested, but happy to have Savannah back home safe. They feel lucky to have spent time with a little girl who changed their lives for the better.
