The VTech Socrates is an educational video game console released in 1988 by VTech. This console features the Socratic robot character, named after the philosopher. His character is visually similar to Johnny Five's Short Circuit.

The system is equipped with a standard wireless handler communicated through infrared reception.

In Germany, the system was sold by "Yeno" under the name "Prof. Weiss-Alles" [sic].

Games

Many of the cartridge games available to Socrates include: Fact 'N Faction , Country State , Memory Mania , Around the World , Hodge-Podge , Game Wizard and Extraordinary Maze . Along with this, other cartridges become available with different functions, such as CAD Design System to design different objects, and the Touch Pad system, especially intended for younger learners. Many cartridges are formed in the form of a 3.5-inch floppy disk.

There are also games built in the console, including math, language, music, and art programs. The system also displays voice capability through the use of additional sound cartridges that can be purchased separately.

The graphics and sounds of the game are slow, with the system often taking a few seconds to complete the image and fill colors of static images; Small areas can move faster. There is a very noticeable delay between the user input and the system that responds. The response time does not seem to be affected by whether or not the sound cartridge is present.

The system comes standard with a full wireless keyboard with two wired controllers. Other optional hardware includes a wireless mouse with an attached mouse pad (especially for use with CAD Design Cartridges) and an electronic touchpad (for Touch Pad cartridges.)

Pricing and termination

The system is quite expensive at its initial release; most consoles see prices up to $ 130. Due to price and competition with other VTech products, including Whiz Kid system, Socrates removed after a few years. Today, it is considered rare, despite attempts to emulate the system running as part of the MESS project.
