Sister is an autobiographical novel written by Raina Telgemeier as a follow-up to the previous autobiographical memoirs of Smile . It details the long summer trips taken from San Francisco to Colorado by his family and explores the relationship between Raina and his sister, Amara.

Plot

Raina is shocked when the one thing she asks for all her young life - a sister - is apparently not the best friend and cheerful playmate she hopes for. As they grow together, they fight and fight until they negotiate to gain a better understanding and reconciliation during the disruption of the long journey.

Technical

Telgemeier handed her a storyboard/thumbnail draft to her sister three years before publishing a novel, seeking Amara's approval to tell the story when Raina remembers her. Amara gives insights on some sketches and helps Raina develop a second draft.

The panels were colored by Braden Lamb.


Reception

This book received positive reviews. Maya Van Wagenen, reviewing for The New York Times describes the story as "[we] all live [...] uncomfortable yet transcendent" and adds it "quick and fun reading." Kirkus's review calls him "the winner," "laugh-out-loud funny [...] and quietly serious at once"; then, Kirkus marks it as one of the best books for children by 2014. According to the School Journal Library , "[r] eaders will be very satisfied". Horn Book Magazine gave it starred reviews in 2014.

In 2015, Telgemeier won the Eisner Award for Best Writers/Artists, citing Sisters. It's also named for the Novel Adult Novel Adult shortlist for Youth 2015, and the 2015 Association for Library Services for the Leading Children's Books for Central Readers.

By 2017 the paperback version has spent 117 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list under "Paperback Graphic Books."
