Plot

Equestria's horses prepare for their first Friendship Festival, supervised by Princess Twilight Sparkle at Canterlot. The festivities were interrupted by the invasion of monsters commanded by the Shadow Tempest unicorn, who used the magical obsidian balls to haunt fellow Twilight princesses; Celestia's daughter gave Princess Luna an incomplete instruction to seek help from the "hippo queen" before they were both terrified. Twilight escaped from the city with five pony friends - Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Applejack, and Fluttershy - and his dragon assistant Spike. Tempest was contacted by his superior, the Hurricane King, who reminded him to gather all of Equestria's daughters for him to utilize their magic through his mystic staff, and promised to return his horn instead.

The Twilight group travels to the desert town of Klugetown to look for the "hippos" mentioned above. A cat freak named Capper offers to escort the group, secretly intending to sell it to pay off the debt; however, he develops true friendship with them. Twilight finds atlases that reveal "hippos" to become hippogriffs, which expose Capper's betrayal. After the group dodged Tempest chasing the delivery aircraft, Tempest brought Capper to guide him to them, but he deliberately misjudged him to redeem the deceiving group.

At lunch breaks, captain Celaeno who looks like a seabird and his crew reluctantly allows the group path, revealing themselves as former pirates who have been forced into the services of the Hurricane King. Rainbow Dash persuaded the pirates to defy orders and take the group to the hippogriff kingdom at Mount Aris. In celebration, he did Sonic Rainboom who accidentally gave their location to Tempest, forcing the group to escape in hot air balloons before Tempest destroyed the ship with pirates and Capper aboard.

The group reached Mount Aris and found it deserted; while exploring the ruins, they are trapped in an underwater cave, where they are saved from drowning by the rich Princess Skystar and headed to Seaquestria's underwater home. Skystar identifies his species as Hippogriff, altered by the magic pearl used by his mother, Queen Novo, to hide from the King of Hurricanes; Novo demonstrates by turning the horses into seaponies and Spike into a bloated fish. When Novo denied they were using pearls to fight the Storm King, Twilight desperately tried to steal it while allowing his friends to subconsciously distract the seaponies. He unknowingly triggers an alarm, pushing the angry queen to drive the whole group to the surface.

Abandoned by his friends for his actions, Twilight was kidnapped by Tempest and taken to the Hurricane King at Canterlot for his magical absorbed; on the way, Tempest gets Twilight's sympathy when he reveals how he lost his horn in a monster attack as a foal, causing his own friends to avoid his unstable magic. Meanwhile, after Spike warned his Twilight friends to catch him, Capper, pirate, and Hippogriff Skystar returned to help them infiltrate Canterlot and rescue. The Storm King responded by making a tornado in the city with his newly empowered staff, betraying Tempest as well. Twilight saves Tempest from a tornado and reunites with his friends, who work with him to take on the staff. The Storm King throws the obsidian ball at the group to reclaim the staff, but Tempest jumps in his path, petrifying them both. The body of the Storm King falls and crumbles, while the group uses the staff's magic to revive Tempest, which restores the stolen magic to restore the damaged princesses and towns.

Production

Development

In San Diego Comic-Con International in 2012, Friendship Is Magic writer Meghan McCarthy commented on the possibility of a movie based on this series, saying that it was not in his control whether the movie was or not. will be created. The film was announced on October 20, 2014, with Joe Ballarini attached as screenwriter and McCarthy as co-executive producer. Hasbro Studios President Stephan Davis said of the movie "I think it gives us a chance to tell a bigger story, which we may [can not] tell on television" and that "it is also an opportunity to expand the franchise". The film is one of the first films produced through self-financing film label from Hasbro Studios, Allspark Pictures, which also produced live-action adaptations of Jem and the Holograms . During the AU PonyCon on February 22, 2015, McCarthy said that the film will not be associated with the Equestria Girls spin-off franchise, and that the crew "will be all-out, to ensure nothing just feels like a long episode ".

The director of the series Jayson Thiessen and McCarthy are both confirmed as movie directors and screenwriters, respectively; Michael Vogel is also signed as co-executive producer alongside McCarthy, with Hasbro executives Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis as producers. Rita Hsiao and Vogel were later announced as co-authors with McCarthy.

In early October 2016, GagnÃÆ'Â © reported that Nik Gipe was hired to the film staff as his assistant. He also mentioned that the film was being animated using Toon Boom Harmony instead of the usual Adobe Flash animation software used in the television series. According to art director Rebecca Dart, they want to keep the look and feel of a television show, and the use of Toon Boom Harmony allows them to add "simple but impactful changes" to designs for large screens, such as depth and shadow for their eyes and ears, and the impression of indentation hearts at the bottom of their nails. The production of this film ends on July 29, 2017.

The production crew uses simple 3D modeling in Autodesk Maya to determine the location of cameras, lenses, and angles, rough lighting, placement of characters and buffers, and the manner in which characters will seek and express. The pre-visualization crew were able to use a more detailed 3D background during the development of the film to integrate a simple 3D character model, and then be able to test the Toon Boom animation on top of this screen using assigned placements by Maya, helping to accelerate production.
