History

Formation and early years

Born as the son of the Southern Methodist University All-American player Arthur Millard and brother of a football player, MercyMe's main singer Bart Millard wanted to become a soccer player, but his football career ended when he injured his ankle in a high school soccer game. As a result of his injury, Millard took the choir as an elective. During his freshman year at college, Millard's father died. His young pastor, who moved from Texas to Florida, invited Millard to work with his young group's cult group. Millard accepted his invitation and proceeded to work on video and sound systems for the group. On the day when the band's vocalist was sick on stage, Millard took on the singing challenge for the group. James (Jim) Bryson played the piano for the band and then went on to play with Millard and the worship band on the way to Switzerland. This trip is the cause of consideration Millard and Bryson play full time music. Millard and his friend, guitarist Mike Scheuchzer, moved to Oklahoma City to form MercyMe with Bryson. All three set up a studio and a "living room" at an abandoned childcare center. Bassist Nathan Cochran and Drummer Robby Shaffer joined the band later, accompanying the band to release six independent projects before signing a contract with INO Records in 2001. Unlike their first three major label albums, their previous indie project tended to be more oriented to rock rhythm. The group's name, "MercyMe", originated during Millard's time as a youth service apprentice in Florida. Fearing that her grandson was at home every time she called, Millard's grandmother would exclaim, "Geez, why do not you get a real job?"

Almost There , Delivered To and Not Canceled (2001-2004)

After signing a contract with INO Records, the band released their first major debut album, Almost There . The single "I Can Only Imagine" won the Dove Award in 2002 for this year's song; However, it was not until three years after it was released before the song began to gain mainstream success, topping the Billboard sales chart of 200 for seven weeks, peaking at No. 1. 71 on Hot 100, No. 33 on Mainstream Top 40, No. 27 on Adult Top 40, No. 5 in Contemporary Adult, and No. 52 in Lagu Lagu Negara. The success of the single ultimately encouraged Almost There to become certified double platinum, representing the sale of over 2 million albums, as well as platinum itself certified.

In 2002, MercyMe released Spoken For , which occupies No. position. 2 on the Christian Album Ladder. The two single albums, "Spoken For" and "Word of God Speak", went on to peak at No. 1. 1 on the Christian charts, with "Word of God Speak" spending 22 weeks over the newly created Billboard Christian Chart. The album was eventually certified gold by the RIAA.

Delivered To earned the band three Dove Awards, but to some extent ignored by the attention that "I Just Imagine" received in the mainstream market at the time.

In 2003, guitarist Barry Graul, previously with hard rock band Christian Whitecross, joined MercyMe, giving the second guitarist to MercyMe to give a deeper depth to their third studio album, Undone . In 2004, the band was titled "Imagine Tour" with fellow artists Amy Grant and Bebo Norman. In addition to the title of "Imagine Tour", MercyMe released their third major label album, Undone , culminating in No. 12 on Billboard 200 and No. 1 in Christian Album Ladder, their highest debut on the chart at the time. The album spawned three successful singles - "Here With Me" (which topped the Christian Song charts and reached No. 12 on the Adult Contemporary chart and No. 38 on the Adult Top 40 chart), "Homesick" (which reached No. 3 in the Christian Song chart and No. 9 on the Adult Contemporary graph), and "In The Eye Blink" (which topped the Christian Song charts). The album itself won the Dove Award for Pop/Contemporary Albums of the Year at the 36th GMA Dove Awards, and was certified gold by the RIAA.

MercyMe also released a live video album, "MercyMe Live", in 2004, which was eventually certified platinum by the RIAA.

The Christmas Sessions and Come to Breathe (2005-2006)

In 2005, MercyMe launched a tour with Jeremy Camp, The Afters and Monk and Neagle to support their album, Undone .

After the release of Undone in 2004, the band took time to rest before releasing the next major release, so the band, looking at the odds, decided to work on Christmas records. The Christmas Sessions were recorded and finally released on September 27, 2005. The Christmas Sessions produced 7 songs that reached the top 40 on the Christian Songs chart (with one hit No. 1 and the other two reaching the top ten) , and four of them are in the list of the top 40 Contemporary Adults (with one peaking in the top 10). The album itself peaked at No. 64 on Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Christian Song chart.

To promote The Christmas Sessions , MercyMe organized a Christmas tour with Steven Curtis Chapman, who also released a Christmas album titled All I Really Want for Christmas .

In 2006, MercyMe released Coming Up to Breathe , mapped in No. 13 on Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Christian Album chart. Although the band has gained a reputation as an adult contemporary group with their other albums, the group decided to make Coming Up to Breathe a more rock-oriented album, in their earlier grunge-influenced influences. album. Thus, it also peaked at No. 5 on Top Rock and No Album charts. 13 on the Top Alternative Album chart, their only graphical appearance on this note to date.

Come to Breathe spawned three single radios ("So Long Self", "Hold Fast", and "Bring the Rain"), two of them ("So Long Self" and "Bring the Rain") reached the top spot on the Christian Songs charts. "So Long Self" and "Hold Fast" also reached the top 30 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Come to Breathe finally certified gold by RIAA.

To support Coming Up to Breathe MercyMe titled "Coming Up to Breathe Tour", along with Audio Adrenaline (in her farewell tour) and Phil Wickham, saw half of their shows sold out two weeks into the tour.

All That In I , Come to Breathe: Acoustics and 10 (2007-2009)

On November 20, 2007, MercyMe released All That Is Within Me . Millard, the band's lead singer, believes that All That Is Within Me will be a worship album with half of the songs that cover the song and half the other original songs; However, when the band entered the studio, they finally wrote all the songs found on this album.

Once released, the album peaked at No. 15 on Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Christian Song chart. The album contains three singles ("God With Us", "You Reign" and "Finally Home"), all of which top 3 on the Christian Song chart; "Finally the House" also peaked at No. 17 on the Adult Contemporary graph (their last appearance on the chart to date). "All That Is Within Me" is also certified gold by the RIAA.

In 2008, the band released Coming Up to Breathe: Acoustic, an acoustic version of their early release Coming Up to Breathe.

On April 7, 2009, MercyMe released their greatest greatest hit compilation, 10 , a double album consisting of 15 studio recordings (12 of which were previous singles and 3 of which were new recordings) and 11 live or video concepts, as well as some documentaries about the band. This album charted in No. 18 on Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Christian Song chart, although no singles were released from this album.

After ending the "Generous Mr. Lovewell" tour, MercyMe was asked to perform the national anthem in the Dallas Cowboys game.
