The Supernaturals is a 5-piece guitar-based indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Fronted by singer-songwriter James McColl, they signed to Parlophone in 1996, and had a series of singles taken from three albums and four EPs. Other members include Mark Guthrie, Derek McManus, Gavin Crawford, and Ken McAlpine. The band's most famous songs ("Smile" and "I Was not Built To Get Up") were featured prominently in a series of television commercials. In total they scored five Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart.

Careers

The band was formed in 1991 by Derek McManus (guitar), James McColl (guitar/vocals), Gavin Crawford (drums) and Mark Guthrie (bass). Their first cassette release was "Big 7" in 1992 followed by "Dark Star" in early 1993. The band toured Scotland, selling copies of "Big 7" and "Dark Star" and built up a good fan base. Ken McAlpine joined the band in early 1994 on the keyboard with Sean Guthrie and Steve Jeffrey sitting on as his replacement on the keyboard occasionally. The band often plays long sets and features many cover versions of songs unwanted by bands like The Move, The Replacements and The Monkeys. They released the CD album "Sitting in the Sun" in 1994 and played at the Sound City Festival in Glasgow with Trashcan Sinatra in April 1994. They followed it with "Let it Bleat" in 1995. Gavin Crawford (drums) left the band in 1995 to be replaced by Alan Tilston. In mid 1995 The Supernaturalals were played unsigned at the Phoenix Festival and T in the Park.

In 1995 The Supernaturalals came to the attention of Andy Ross of Food Records and they signed for Food/EMI in November 1995. They spent early 1996 recording their debut album with producer Pete Smith and playing gigs in support of Dodgy (on the Big Top Tour), Tina Turner , Sleeper, Menswear, The Bluetones and Ash. The band's second release in Food, "Lazy Lover" was supported by a major UK tour with Silversun and Grasshow in Autumn 1996. The band's upcoming release "Day Before Yesterday's Man" was in January 1997 and the band toured with Boo Radleys and Gene. They released back "Smile" in April 1997 and their debut album "No Problems" was released in May 1997. The song "Smile" was a success in Japan with the album stays on the charts in Japan for 12 weeks.. The band toured Europe and England with Robbie Williams in the fall of 1997.

After spending the first recording of 1998 with Pete Smith, they released their second album "A Tune a Day" (named after music instruction books) in August 1998 and 3 singles were released from the album, "I Was not Built to Rise", "Sheffield Song" and "Everest". This was supported by festival performances and several headlining tours and 30 dates of UK Arena and a European tour with Robbie Williams and Divine Comedy in early 1999.

The band left Food/EMI Records in Fall 1999. They recorded their third album "What we did last summer" in Glasgow in 2000 and released to Koch/Universal in May 2002. Mark Guthrie left the band in December 2000 and Ken McAlpine left the band in July 2001. They were replaced by David Mitchell (keyboard) and Paul Malcolm (guitar) with James McColl switching to bass. To support the band's release the band toured the UK and with The Proclaimers in late 2001 and made several appearances at the festival to support the album. The band's first single from the album "Finishing Credits" was on a list of songs banned by the BBC after the 9/11 attacks because the phrase "This is the end of the world we know" is featured in the song.

The Supernaturalals took a break after the release of their third album in 2002. At its peak, they enjoyed a loyal fanbase, with some high quality fansites.

In February 2012 The Supernaturals started practicing again with 4 original members. For the next two years they wrote and recorded their fourth album (360) at Gorbals Sound Studios in Glasgow. This album was released on April 6, 2015.

The band was nominated for Ivor Novello Award in 1998 for the best contemporary song for "Smile" along with The Verve's "The Drugs Do not Work" and Radiohead's "No Surprises". The band won the Tartan Clef award in 1997 as the best new Scottish band.

Songs are often associated with other songs in the same album as the general theme. The album It Does not Matter Anymore received good reviews (8/10 NME and 4/5 Q ) as follow-up < A Tune a Day (7/10 NME and 4/5 Q ).

Creative output sees about 100 songs written in five years. They played in music festivals in the UK, and throughout Europe, They also became a staple in the compilation album as the band rested after the release of their third album in 2002. At its peak, they enjoyed loyal fans, with some high-quality fans.

Television appearances including Top of the Pops, TFI Friday, The Jack Docherty Show, Full Booked and The Big Breakfast , with keyboardist Ken McAlpine emerging as a contestant on Never Mind the Buzzcocks (for Phill Jupitus team). The band performed at every T in the Park festival between 1995 and 1998.

The song is also used as the theme music for the Manic Episodes television review show.

"I Was not Built to Get Up" was used in an advertising campaign for Direct Debit on British television in 1999. The song "Monday Mornings" was used in the movie Fast Food in 1998. "Life is Motorway" has been used on the BBC TV show Homes Under the Hammer .

Rod Stewart recorded the band's song "Dylan's Day Off" for his album "The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998".

The songwriter McColl went on to become a guitarist in the band The Hussys. In 2007 the band released "We Expected" an 8-song album on Quince Records in Japan. The band's 2008 album "Super Pro" was recorded by Kevin Burleigh (Glasvegas, Supernaturalals, Simple Minds) at Byre Studio in Beauly. This was supplemented by 4 songs and was released as "Super Pro" by Quince Records in Japan in 2009. The band's 2009 UK album "Japanese Graffiti" had a voice over the 1980s. The band then recorded the "Tokyo Elephant Brothers" in the camp vans in 2010. The band's last album to date is "Please Secure Your Valuables" which was released in 2011. The band has played sessions on Rapal, Channel M and Janice Long radio shows.

Their songs "Rock Concert", "Napoleon", "Friends Reunited", "Warm and Fuzzy" and "We Expected" have been used in various ways at Jersey Shore , 17 years , Paris Hilton's BFF and Made on MTV. "Rock Concert" is used in US national advertising for Payless Shoes. Their songs "Aftershave" "Roller Disco" "T Rex Records" and "Jenny Teaches Rock School" have been played by Rodney Bingenheimer. The Hills also featured their songs "Rocksteady" and "We Expected". The song "Roller Disco" is the top 10 single played in Peru in 2009 along with "The Greatest Live Actress" and "Aftershave" which received broadcast in South America. "Tiger" is used in Russian-language film "20 Cigarettes". The song "Think of my heart as a campervan" has been used on BBC 1 TV shows that became legalizer.

Keyboardist McAlpine later became the cameraman for EÃÆ'²rpa, House Guest, Dragons Den, and music video for Justin Currie.
