The Ipana Troubadors is the music radio program that started in New York at WEAF on in 1923. In fact, the Troubadors were the Sam Lanin Orchestra. They opened the show with their theme, "Smiles."

The event was sponsored by Bristol Myers' Ipana Toothpaste, and during this period Bristol Myers introduced the slogan, "Ipana for a Beauty Smile; Sal Hepatica for a Health Smile."

With a mix of hot swing music and new songs, the event moved from WEAF to the NBC Red Network (1926-28) for the 30 minute series on Wednesday night at 9 pm. It was then aired on the Blue Network (1929-31) Monday at 8:30 pm. Network radio exposure made Ipana Troubadors one of the most famous dance bands of the 1920s, resulting in a record deal with Columbia and reservations in a dance hall, such as Casino at Bemus Point, New York. However, the recording contract only includes Ipana Troubadors, so Lanin continues to record on other labels under his own name and various pseudonyms.

With title changes, the event continued at Red Network (1933-34), Wednesday at 9 pm. Helen Hayes was a guest on the 4th of October 1933 show, appearing in a scene with John Beal. In 1934, The Ipana Troubadors joined Fred Allen The Hour of Smiles .

The policy of radio stations in the early 1920s dictated that no commercial messages were interfering with the program. However, after the program was transferred to NBC, attitudes toward advertising accelerated, as Timothy D. Taylor notes in "Music and Advertising on Early Radios":

Spot and national ads often have links, often just regular posters or print ads, and often more. A brochure on Ipana toothpaste manufactured by NBC in 1928 included photos from Ipana's tie-in to customers writing at: a Magic Radio Time Table pad, so listeners could write favorite programs they; bridge score cards; photos of Ipana Troubadors, resident programmers; card with praise for a smile. All these items have a clearly displayed Ipana name. Then there is the tie-in material available to the dealer: posters, brochures, "radio applause cards" that listeners can do to post comments about the program, and more (National Broadcasting Company, Increase Smiles from the Nation! >).

Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey were heard on the show during the 1920s, along with Nichols Red and others. Musicians during the 1930s included Jack Teagarden and Joe Venuti, with vocalists Chick Bullock and Dick Robertson. Another guest was vaudeville headliner Marion Harris, who was billed by NBC as "The Little Girl with Great Voice."
