Rock Is Dead was a world arena tour by American rock band Marilyn Manson in 1999. This is the second tour launched to support their third full-length LP studio, Mechanical Animals , which was released on September 15, 1998.

This tour is basically a rebranding of Marilyn Manson and Hole tour together with Beautiful Monsters. Although initially successful, the Beautiful Monster is characterized by a lot of fracase and well publicized between the frontman of each band and off stage. Disputes caused a fall between the two groups which resulted in the departure of the hole from the playbill. Marilyn Manson decided to continue the tour and give the opening act, Monster Magnet, equivalent billing as co-headliner for Rock is Dead.

This tour was recorded for VHS God is on TV in 1998 and released on November 2, 1999.

Event performance and theme

"The Inauguration of the Mechanical Christ" was created as an intro to Marilyn Manson, who will appear fixed to the cross made of television sets as it rises from beneath the stage.

Marilyn Manson will also act as an officer during "Unbelievable Hate Anthem" and as a cover, Manson's reserve singer will arrive as a second officer with a shotgun. The gun will shoot to Manson's back, sprinkling blood to the crowd. With Manson who has been 'killed', his body will be dragged from the stage.

The podium scene during the Antichrist Superstar continues to appear for tracks of the same name. This caused a bit of controversy over what was to be the date of the original North American finals tour. During the show Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marilyn Manson was surprised to find the Antichrist Superstar logo on his podium has been replaced with a smiling face, which eventually led Manson to walk off the stage and not return.

Set props include a big sign spelling D-R-U-G-S, as well as a gold confetti often fired from the cannon.

After the billing of Imperial Teen withdrawn from the tour, Grammy-nominated American psychobilly band Nashville Pussy took over the opening action slot of Monster Magnet starting on April 2, 1999, a concert at the Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Manson explained to MTV that Imperial Teen's initial inclusion on the tour was "at Courtney's request.I think we might be better, because that would be an additional torment for our fans they do not need." She added that as she enjoys their music on the CD, she feels there is too much difference in the musical approach and their performances for their continued inclusion on the tour to work.

Fellow Floridians and old band friends Jack Off Jill joined the Manson tour for four dates from March 25, 1999, at Uno Arena in New Orleans until March 30, 1999, at the National Car Center Arena in their hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for second group homecoming concerts.

Incident

The name change caused a minor dispute because Korn and Rob Zombie were already in the middle of a tour of the same name. The special tour consists of 45 dates from 21 March 1999 to 8 August 1999.

The first two shows were canceled after Manson dislocated his ankle during the last Monsters Monster show in Los Angeles and rescheduled for a later date.

Following the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado, the band canceled the remaining dates of the tour in honor of the victims, explaining, "This is not a great atmosphere to get out playing rock 'n' roll show, for us or fans." However, Manson maintains that music, movies, books or video games can not be blamed, stating,

Columbine warning

The day after the shooting, State Senator Dale Shugars (R-Mich.) Attended the band concert, along with a policy advisor, a local police officer and state senate senate, at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan to conduct research for the proposed that he had created that would require parental warnings on concert tickets and promotional materials for any player who has released a note containing the Parent Advisor's stickers in the past five years. According to Shugars, the show begins with a singer who wears a "demon wing" as he jumps off a cross that is finally burned. He then describes seeing the fans, whom he describes as normal children, "under [Manson] control" when he did the sequence that "glorifies the murder of a police officer." Finally, he reported the singer telling a series of dreams where the police had sex on him before Jesus Christ descended from the sky made of LSD and told him that God's true name was "Drugs." After that, the band launched to "I Do not Like Drugs (But Drugs Like Me)". Shugars expressed concern that the show had a disastrous effect on concert audiences, "I think something's going on that you can not see from the outside." He concluded that "they are all part of the kind of drug-culture, with a subculture of violence and murder and hatred, and anti-family values, anti-traditional values, anti-authority" and added that "We have a murder rate which is worrying in schools, and youth violence and drug improvement, I would say that although they are not all to blame on surprise entertainers like Marilyn Manson, I think he is promoting it and can be part of the mistake. "

On 25 April 1999, conservative scholar William Bennett and Manson criticism, former US Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) Designated the group as a contributing factor to the massacre during their performance at Meet the Press. Three days later, the city of Fresno, California unanimously issued a resolution condemning "Marilyn Manson or other negative entertainers that encourage anger and hatred against society as a threat of attacks against the children of this community." Councilor Henry Perea, the author of the resolution, said, "If people are on the streets and engage in some of the same behaviors that [Manson] show on stage, they may be arrested." In Portsmouth, New Hampshire, students are prohibited from wearing Marilyn Manson T-shirts The next day, ten US Senators, spearheaded by US Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), Signed and sent a letter to Edgar Bronfman Jr., president of Interscope Records-owner Seagrams, asked for a voluntary quiz over his company's distribution of "music that exalts violence" to children. The signers are eight Republicans and two Democrats, namely, US Senator Wayne Allard (R-Colo.), US Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), US Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine), US Senator Tim Hutchinson R-Maine). -Ark.), US Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), US Senator Kent Conrad (DN.D.), US Senator, Byron Dorgan (DN.D.), US Senator John Ashcroft (R-Mo.) US. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.). The letter specifically shows the band, among other things, to produce songs that "glorify death and destruction of human beings" that "reflect horribly" the actions of Harris and Klebold.

Eleven days after the Columbine massacre, Marilyn Manson wrote an op-ed article for Rolling Stone, titled "Columbine: whose fault is that?", Where he rebukes politics and the media "witch hunt" and condemns "facts it's sad that America puts the killer on the cover of Time magazine, giving them fame as our favorite movie star [...] Do not be surprised if every child who is pressed has two new idols. "

A few days later, on May 4, 1999, a trial on the practice of marketing and distribution of violent content to minors by the television, music, film and video games industry was held before the United States Senate Committee on Trade, Science and Transport. It is chaired by US Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) And consists of eleven Republican and nine Democrats, including US Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah.) And US Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) And cultural observer, professor and mental health professionals including William Bennett and Archbishop of Denver, Reverend Charles J. Chaput. The band was among those criticized by the participants, as well as fellow label-mate Nine Inch Nails and the 1999 Wachowski brothers film The Matrix, for their allegedly contributing to an environment that made tragedies such as Columbine possible. Senator Hatch thought that Manson cut off his US tour of the band because "he or whatever his case may realize that he can be highly derided and that his work is so offensive." Among the invited guests, the CEOs of the four major world music distributors refused to attend. This was criticized by Bennett who said their absence, however, amounted to "[p] ublic disgrace." My hunch is they will continue to ignore you as they do today. " Outside observers such as Nina Crowley, director of Mass Mic's anti-censorship organization, expressed disappointment about the hearing, commenting that it was "a highly stacked thing." Hilary Rosen, president and CEO of RIAA, shares this opinion and thinks "it's staged as a political theater [...] They just want to find a way to embarrass the industry, and I'm not ashamed."

Senator Brownback, Hatch and Lieberman concluded the process by requesting an investigation from the Federal Trade Commission and the US Department of Justice about the practice of marketing the entertainment industry to minors. The following month, President Bill Clinton granted the request by adding that "Children who study the culture of violence become insensitive to it and are better able to do so." The release of the FTC report on 13 September 2000 will then lead future Democratic presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman to propose introducing laws that will levy criminal penalties against distributors participating in marketing and distributing adult-oriented media to minors. The Media Marketing Accountability Act was introduced by Senator Lieberman in June 2001, sponsored by United States Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.).
