Oxygen is a digital cable and an American satellite television channel owned by NBC's Universal Entertainment Entertainment Group division NBCUniversal, all of which is owned by Comcast. This channel primarily shows criminal programs aimed at women.

The network was founded by Geraldine Laybourne, and carries a format that focuses on lifestyle and entertainment programs that are female-oriented, similar to competing channels such as Lifetime. NBCUniversal acquired the network in 2007; under NBC's ownership, the network is increasingly producing reality shows devoted to demography, and relaunched in 2014 to target the "modern", younger female audience. After the network experienced a successful ranking with programming blocks dedicated to the programming, Oxygen was relaunched in mid-2017 to focus primarily on real crime programs.

In February 2015, approximately 77.5 million American households (66.5% of households with television) received Oxygen. With the current format, the main network competes with Investigation Discovery and HLN.

Histori

The privately-run Oxygen Media was founded in 1998 by former Nickelodeon executive Geraldine Laybourne, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, and producer Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach (from Carsey-Werner fame). Laybourne is a service founder, chairman, and CEO, staying with channels up to NBCUniversal sales. The company's Oxygen cable network was launched on February 2, 2000.

The channel's first headquarters are in Battery Park City in New York City, near the World Trade Center. It was thrown off the air on September 11, 2001; NY1 Time Warner Cable's regional news channel was broadcast to all Oxygen customers across the country until the studio reopened within a week of the attack.

Network operations were then consolidated at Chelsea Market, Nabisco plant at 15th Street and Ninth Avenue in New York City. Oxygen Operations is now based at 30 Rockefeller Plaza as part of the Comcast consolidation of the newly owned NBC Universal property.

The channel initially started as an interactive service focusing on native programming with some reruns (like Kate & Allie ), and displaying a black bar at the bottom of the screen (referred to as "line", occupying 12% bottom of the screen) that will display various information (its interactive section involves channel websites); this technique was cloned by the New TNN Spike predecessor; the line finally fell. Prior to 2005, the channel was carrying a limited schedule of regular season WNBA games produced by NBA TV. Channels then start focusing primarily on reality shows, reruns, and movies. For a while during a talk show syndication, Oxygen broadcast a pending weekly report from The Tyra Banks Show . The yoga/meditation/exercise program Inhale is the last inaugural air oxygen program into the NBC Universal channel era, though in repeats; it was canceled in 2010.

Campus Ladies , Bliss , Oprah After the Show , Talk Sex with Sue Johanson , The Janice Dickinson Model Agency , , Girls Behaving Badly and Bad Girls Club , a reality series, is the main event of the network at this time. Oxygen was launched with Direct DirecTV trains, and arrived on Dish Network in early 2006 during a carrier conflict carrier with Lifetime.

Acquisition by NBC Universal

On October 9, 2007, NBC Universal announced it would buy Oxygen for $ 925 million. The sale was completed on November 20, 2007. NBC Universal Cable Division announced an industry-front presentation on April 23, 2008, that the channel will change its image and introduce a new logo on June 17, 2008; in the few months since the sale, the title Oh! removed from channel visual imagery. The logo aired one week earlier on June 8, 2008.

For the 2008 Summer Olympics, an event broadcast by Oxygen and weekly events related to gymnastics, horseback riding, and pools synced through NBC's Olympic broadcast. On June 29, 2009, Oxygen premiered Dance Your Ass Off, a reality dance competition program in which overweight people dance while they lose weight; the program was canceled after the second season due to low ratings. On April 5, 2010, Oxygen launched its second night of the original program with the premiere of the fifth season Tori & amp; Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood .

After the acquisition of NBC Universal by Comcast and the last-minute replacement of the EQ Network Network cable channel network with Esquire Network (originally intended to replace G4) on September 23, 2013, some of the programs obtained were dissolved to Oxygen.

In April 2014, as part of the relentless redistribution of NBC's cable network by the head of the new division of Bonnie Hammer, and the appointment of Frances Berwick as head of Bravo's Oxygen and sister network, it was revealed that Oxygen would shift its programming strategy to focus on young female viewers " modern". Berwick explains that the new slate, which includes upcoming series like Repair My Choir , Cute Girl , Nail'd It , Sisterhood Hip Hop, Street Street Throwdown, and the Preachers of LA spin-off plan will "provide freshness, authenticity, high emotional bets and optimism that this demographic looking ", and that many of the new programs will" appeal to the things that matter in the lives of young, millenial women "and become" authentic ". As part of the re-focus, the network also introduced a new slogan, "Very Real".

2017: Refocus on the actual crime

In December 2016, it was reported that NBCUniversal was considering reformatting Oxygen as a truly crime-oriented channel. Since 2015, this genre is increasingly in demand, especially among young adult women. After introducing a genuine crime programming block known as Crime Time - which airs on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, and is devoted to a series like Snapped - the network sees an increase 42% in total views, and a 22% increase among women 25-54. NBC is reported to have been in talks with Dick Wolf - producer of NBC's Law and Order and Chicago franchises, to take equity shares in a re-branded channel that can be anchored by the program.

In February 2017, NBCUniversal confirmed that they plan to reformat oxygen with a focus on crime programs targeted at women, including Dick Wolf's new season produced by Cold Justice (which TNT has abandoned). The change was accompanied by a larger re-branding later in the year, with a new logo featuring the Oxygen name given in the style of the yellow police tape. NBC Universal Lifestyle Network president Frances Berwick stated that the network has not yet determined the fate of non-network crime programming, such as Bad Girls Club , after full re-branding is in force. The new Oxygen lineup will be built mostly around existing libraries of crime-oriented programming not scripted (such as Snapped and spin-offs); Berwick explained that NBC did not rule out the addition of network reruns of police procedures, such as Chicago , CSI and NCIS franchises as well (with the last two already broadcast by network at the time).

During the upcoming presentation, Oxygen launched another new crime program for the upcoming season, such as Dick Wolf's , Soledad O'Brien Mystery and Scandal , Cold Ice Murder (to be hosted and executives produced by Ice-T), and a document about the Jessica Chambers murder produced with NBCUniversal-funded Buzzfeed. The network also announced Retried , a new series under development by former HLN anchors, Nancy Grace, and Kept Alive . In September 2017, Oxygen and USA Network gained network replays from Chicago P.D. , which was added to their schedules in October 2017.
