History

Bernie Shulman opened his first mega-discount drug store in Mayfield Heights, Ohio in the 1970s. In 1979, one of Shulman's managers, Marc Glassman, opened his own shop, Marc's, on the west side of Cleveland at the Southland Shopping Center in Middleburg Heights. The first store was badly damaged in a fire in October 1980 that started in, and was demolished, adjacent to the J.C shopping center. Penney. Marc closed for several months, finally reopened in a larger space on the same site.

Following the success of the Middleburg Heights store, Glassman constructed Marc's additional outlet. In 1983, he bought a Shulman shop. Glassman continues to build stores in Greater Cleveland. Glassman's Western store was named Marc's, while the east was named Bernie Shulman's, in honor of Shulman, who died in 1976, and because of brand recognition.

When Marc's stores expanded south to Solon and Akron, recognition of the name Marc grew. Glassman decided to stop Bernie Shulman's name for the new store, using the name of Marc for a grand opening, including a shop east of Cleveland. The first of Marc's "superstores" opened in Garfield Heights on June 30, 1992. At the end of the year, all Bernie Shulman stores were redrawn Marc's .

Other businesses

In the 1980s, Glassman also had a small deli/grill restaurant next to the Middleburg Heights/Southland store. The restaurant closed when the Southland store expanded into the space occupied by the restaurant. A small toaster was set up inside Marc's shop.

In 1987, Glassman bought, at auction, Chuck E. Cheese, a restaurant/videogame, in the center of Southland, near Marc's shop. It was converted into Marc's Funtime Pizza Palace. Similar to Chuck E. Cheese, it is a popular place for children's birthday parties. About a year later, he bought a second Chuck E. Cheese, near North Olmsted. When Chuck E. Cheese's franchise emptied the area, Glassman acquired and changed several places in Greater Cleveland. In 2004, all Marc's Pizza Funtime Palace was closed. The original Funtime Marc in Southland is one of the destroyed stores to build the BJ Wholesale Club.

In 1994, Glassman purchased the Dover Lake Waterpark in Sagamore Hills, Ohio, which he operated until 2005. The park was sold in 2006 to the Brandywine Ski Resort, which uses the property for expansion.
