History
The school is on the site of the demolished state manor, Etwall Hall, Etwall, located just outside Derby, traditionally from the wealthy Parish/landowner Port family of ports. In 1952, the Derbyshire County Council bought Etwall Hall from Reg Parnell, a famous racing driver. The hall had been used during the Second World War by the Army, first as a gas station and then as a supply center of equipment and left in a somewhat dilapidated state. After its demolition, a secondary school, Etwall Secondary, and a secondary grammar school, John Port Grammar School, was built on the site. In 1965 they were merged to form the John Port School that occupies the site today.
The name of the Port family, which lives in the hall, has been attributed to Etwall since the 15th century. The most famous son of the family, Sir John Port, is the founder of the nearby Repton School and is committed to advancing education for young men in the village. Therefore, it seems appropriate that the new school is named after him.
School site
This huge site has an open feel, being a 'green' campus with lots of open space among individual teaching facilities. The center of this site is focused around the lake, one of the original fishing ponds that exist at the base of Etwall Hall.
The teaching facilities are spread throughout the site, with each faculty having a separate building. The building is mostly named after settlements and features in Derbyshire and Peak District, with the exception of this being Flamsteed, named after the renowned local scientist John Flamsteed, and the Jubilee Center, named for the Jubilee Berlian Queen Elizabeth II.
The Learning Resources Center is located at the center of the site, occupying most of the ground floor of the 'B' block.
The site is also home to Etwall Leisure Center, with public access from Hilton Road. The new center officially opened on July 17, 2009, though not open to the public until August 5, 2009. The new facilities include a 25-meter swimming pool, squash courts, fitness suites and a large sports hall.
Academic performance
Schools get above average results on the GCSE, and the standards in GCE US and A levels are above average by Ofsted. The school is twin with the Melle Gymnasium, and there is an annual joint exchange with their windband, with a biennial concert held at John Port School. School friendship emerged from his twin set by the mayor of Osnabruck.
