The ACRISS was formed in 1989 by Avis, Budget, Europcar and Hertz and rearranged as the European Economic Interest Group (EEIG) in 1992. Its role is based on ongoing goals. ACRISS members include Alamo, Enterprise, National, and Maggiore.
Much of this is based on car rental industry standards including Global Distributions Systems (GDS) used as an interface between travel agencies and car rental companies.
The key role of ACRISS is to develop standards to avoid misleading information when making online car rental reservations or through electronic means.
ACRISS serves to ensure the provision of accurate information when booking car rentals through an electronic booking system. The accuracy of accurate information provides professional and consumer travel to make informed choices. Information standards have been adopted for Car Code, Special Tool, Airport Location Definition, Railway Location Definition, Estimated Total Cost etc.
ACRISS members identify standard requirements to avoid misleading information in the car rental industry. A project team develops standards to achieve goals within an agreed time frame. The ACRISS meeting allows full engagement with all members and may include attendance by external stakeholders, including, where necessary, ACRISS lawyers, to ensure all legal requirements are met both from the ACRISS perspective and in line with European requirements. Once adopted, the standard is audited for member compliance. ACRISS provides educational and communications support for travel trade and encourages industry adoption.
The ACRISS Car Classification Code is developed and maintained by ACRISS and is designed to enable customers and travel professionals to make informed choices when booking car rentals in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
