Character design
The origins of Pac-Man are disputed. According to the creator of the character T? Ru Iwatani, inspiration is a pizza without slices, which gives him the vision of "animated pizza, racing through the maze, and eating something with his mouth that does not exist." However, he claimed to say in a 1986 interview that character design also derived from simplifying and rounding Japanese characters for mouth, kuchi . The character name comes from spikes ( ???? ) , the Japanese word onomatopoeic to devour something. The original character name is written in English as "Puck-Man", but when Namco localizes the game for the United States, they turn it into "Pac-Man", for fear that the vandal will turn P in Puck into F.
The arcade art on the original Pac-Man describes it as a yellow circle with big mouth and hands, feet, eyes, and long nose. In the game Pac-Man is represented as a two-dimensional sprite of a simple yellow circle with the mouth. 1984 Pac-Land is the first game (lot) that uses its arcade art in the game. Recently Pac-Man emerged as a full three dimensional polygonal model. His design underwent two minor changes to the art of the Puck-Man cabinet over the years, the first of which made his nose smaller in the 1990s and the second changed his eyes and shoes in 2010.

Characterization
Pac-Man is often portrayed as a family man, as a result of some spin-offs from his games starring in family members. She is often seen married to Ms. Pac-Man, and father of one or two children. In many incarnations he also has a pet dog, named Chomp-Chomp in his most famous depictions in cartoons and Pac-Land. They are often seen living inside a house that is shaped like a Pac-Man's face with a window for eyes and a door in place of his mouth. In the cartoon series, the house is painted white, while often in the game it is painted yellow. Pac-Man and Ghost Adventure , a new cartoon of 2013, describes Pac-Man as a high school student who goes to school with Cylindria and Spiral friends.
In the cartoon series Hanna-Barbera, she dubs Ms. Pac-Man "Pepper", Baby Pac-Man is a boy (in the game, she is a girl with a bow just like her mother) and she also has a pet cat named Sourpuss. The second season of the cartoon introduces Pac-Man Jr. as the greaser who is actually Pac-Man's niece, and Super Pac-Man who is not Pac-Man himself, but a separate character that comes after hacking the zipper in the open sky. Pac-Land marks the first official use of Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Baby in the Namco title.
Pac-Man itself is often characterized as a person who likes to have fun and likes to have fun, often with a voracious appetite, who likes adventure but often prefers quiet family life. The title of his first platform, Pac-Land, which illustrates he often rests between levels on signs that read "Rest Time" while ending a three-level bow with his return to his home, leading to a cutscenes where he is seen sitting with his family at dinner and sleeping in his bed. Pac-Man began with Pac-Man doing the task for his family, with various game elements that caused him to suddenly change his mood from happy, sad, angry, silly, and even scaly. It culminates with the Ghost Witch plot to create a monster made from chewed chewing gum that sparked a heroic sense in Pac-Man causing him to search for a witch and stop his plot. The Pac-Man World series describes Pac-Man as generally happy, though a little sarcastic, protects his family, and finally his entire world from an evil ghost named Orson and his plan to take Pac -Land from the spectral zone, where The ghost of the game is said to originate.
Pac-Man's work varies from game-to-game. In the Hanna-Barbera animated series he is said to be the protector of Power Pellet Forest, whose main villain Mezmaron hopes to infiltrate and steal electric pellets for energy to use in his evil scheme. In the game, he is often portrayed as having no job, but is recognized throughout Pac-Land as a hero who constantly outranks them from ghostly threats. Pac-Man World shows that he has a job, because he is seen walking home from work with a lunch box in hand, but never determined exactly what his job is. Pac-Man and Ghost Adventure describe Pac-Man as a student.
Pac-Man has had numerous arch-rivals for years. The mysterious Mezmaron, the villain of the Hanna-Barbera series, uses the five main "ghosts" (as it is called in the television series) of the game - Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde and Sue - as accomplices in his plan to steal electric pellets from the forest Power Pellet. The second Nemesis, Ghost Witch, appeared on Pac-Man 2 and Pac-In-Time, also using the five main ghosts of the game as a henchman. In the first game, he tried to take over the city Pac-Man by creating a monster of chewing gum that has been chewed before. In the second, he tried to get rid of himself from Pac-Man by throwing it into the warp-time. The main culprit of Pac-Man World is Orson, an ordinary ghost who is also an inventive genius. Orson was a villain in the first title, but assisted Pac-Man in the third game against a greater threat to both, Erwin. Spooky, the ghost had once disappeared by Pac-a-Lot, who was released (albeit unintentionally) by Blinky, Inky, Pinky and Clyde. In Pac-Man and Ghost Adventure, the villain is Bethrayus, the brother who died from President Spheros.
Pac-Man's relationship with the four original ghosts that appear in his game is usually one of the friendliest antagonisms. In almost every game and cartoon Pac-Man sees ghosts as a nuisance and not a threat, and often has a useful pellet force to send their bullying attempts in an instant. The ghosts in turn are often described as rude, abusive, and bullying but are ultimately clumsy and useless in their attempts to get better from Pac-Man. At Ghostly Adventures , the ghost girl Pinky has a crush on Pac.
What happened to Pac-Man when he was caught by varied ghosts. The cartoon states that if the ghost "chews" Pac-Man, he will lose his skull for a while. However, after seeing it too graphically for children, the later season even stated that Pac-Man will weaken temporarily after chewing. Pac-Man 2 indicates that Ghost is really adept at scaring Pac-Man, often by making funny faces, and Pac-Man is powerless against them unless he has Power Pellet. Pac-Man World just shows that when Pac-Man touches ghosts, it's like those who come to hit each other. The 2011 cartoon pilot shows that Pac-Man can actually eat ghosts without the help of pellet-power, but if he does a ghost turns into a bland goo in Pac-Man's mouth that he prefers not to eat.
Reception
Since the release of Pac-Man in 1980, Pac-Man has become a social phenomenon and became an icon of the video game industry, as well as popular culture. According to Davie-Brown Index (DBI), Pac-Man has the highest brand awareness of every video game character among American consumers, recognized by 94 percent of them (surpassing Mario and Sonic). Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto even stated that Pac-Man is his favorite video game character. Pac-Man is the first character to be sworn in the International Video Game Hall of Fame Twin Galaxies in 2010. In 2012, GamesRadar puts it as the 73rd "most memorable, influential and evil" protagonist in the game, commenting: "Simple Toru Iwatani , iconic, timeless character designs have seen Pac-Man survive for over 30 years and become an established visual steno for games and gaming cultures around the world. "
Cultural impact
Pac-Man's defense term in mergers and acquisitions refers to hostile takeover targets that try to reverse the situation and take over the would-be acquisition candidate instead, a reference to Pac-Man Power Pellet. Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao was nicknamed "Pac-Man", as did American soccer player Adam Jones.
