Jim Mitchell (born April 28, 1949) is an American underground cartoonist from Milwaukee. Mitchell was part of the comix underground scene of late 1960s/early 1970s Milwaukee and co-founder of Krupp Comics/Kitchen Sink (together with Denis Kitchen and Don Glassford).
In the early 1970s, Mitchell (then a student at Marquette University) regularly made a strip like "Smile" for the Bugle underground newspaper, which was then syndicated to other underground and college newspapers via Krupp Syndication. His strip (and blanket) appears on The Bugle ; in three editions of his own comics, Smile (1971-1972); and in other comix, including Youth Horizon from Shangrila , Own Mother Comics , Weird Sex , Pro Junior >, and Comics & amp; Hungry Chuck Biscuit's. Mitchell was imprisoned in Mexico for four and a half years which prevented his involvement in further evolution of the underground scene, but was released in late 1977.
He runs his own full-service art studio, Distant Thunder Studios, in Milwaukee.
