Origins
Brian Wilson wrote the song in early 1965 while honeymooning with Marilyn. She remembered that "a whole song came to me, it was 'Girl Do not Tell Me.' I have no way to bring it down, but I just heard it all there, from start to finish, and I remember well enough to go later and write the lyrics on a piece of paper. "

Recording
The Beach Boys recorded "Girl Do not Tell Me" on April 30, 1965 at United Western Recorders. Chuck Britz is his engineer. This is one of the first songs featuring Carl Wilson as the lead vocalist (his first unsentable lead is on "Pom Pom Play Girl"), and is one of the few Beach Boys songs from that era to no backing vocals. It was also the first recording session that Bruce Johnston joined as a member of The Beach Boys.
Beach Boys biographer, David Leaf, likened "Girl Do not Tell Me" to The Beatles' single "Ticket to Ride" in 1965, in terms of guitar breaks, drum fills, and vocal delivery. Brian Wilson cites this as an example of how each new Beatles release during this period inspired him as a songwriter, and how, with "Girl Do not Tell Me", "I even tried to write a Beatles song." He says that words drawn out of the words "you will write" are taken from "Ticket to Ride". It has been claimed that Brian intends to send "Girl Do not Tell Me" to The Beatles.
