Joni Mitchell wrote the song from what he heard from his girlfriend, Graham Nash about the Woodstock Music and Art Festival. He has not been there by himself, since he was told by a manager that it would be more profitable for him to appear on The Dick Cavett Show. He wrote it in a hotel room in New York City, watching a report broadcast on television about the festival. "Deprivation can not go give me a strong angle at Woodstock," he told an interviewer shortly after the event. David Crosby, interviewed for the documentary Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind, states that Mitchell has captured the feelings and importance of the Woodstock festival better than anyone who was there.

The lyrics tell the story of a spiritual journey to Max Yasgur's ranch, the festival grounds, and using a prominent holy image, comparing the festival site with the Garden of Eden ("and we must return to the park"). The story begins with the narrator's encounter of fellow travelers ("Well, I find a child of God, he walks along the way") and concludes in their final destination ("by the time we get to Woodstock, we're half a million strong"). There are also references to the Vietnam War ("bomber riding a rifle in the sky...") in combination with the peaceful intentions of festival audiences (... turning into butterflies above our nation).

Release and cover version

Joni Mitchell

Before being released on any album, Mitchell performed "Woodstock" at the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969, one month after Woodstock. The solo show can be seen at the concert festival movie Celebration at Big Sur (released in 1971). Mitchell has not yet developed his dislike for big festival shows. Released on Mitchell's third album Ladies of the Canyon in March 1970, "Woodstock" served as B-side for the single album "Big Yellow Taxi." Mitchell re-recorded "Woodstock" for his two live albums, Miles of Aisles Shadows and Light . The original song was included in the 1996 compilation Hit . The original version of Mitchell featured a loud and haunting arrangement - solo vocals, multi-tracked vocals, and rolled-up Wurlitzer pianos, all done by Mitchell.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; Young

Around the same time that the Ladies of the Canyon appeared, Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; Hard rock upbeat scenario Young was released as the lead single from the 1970 album DÃÆ' Â © jÃÆ' Vu . This version opens with the main guitar played by Neil Young, who also plays solos. Stephen Stills sings lead vocals with backing harmonies from David Crosby and Graham Nash. The Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; The young version of "Woodstock" is also famous for the stop-start instrument pattern, just before "We stardust, we are......" chorus.

Although Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; Young studied songs from Joni Mitchell himself, the band's version of a little rearranging the lyrics from the original. They place the line, "we are billion years of carbon" - which only appears in the last chorus - into each of the first three choruses. Then they replace the phrase with "we are caught in a devil's bargain" in the last chorus that is also in Mitchell's last chorus.

"Woodstock" is one of several songs DÃÆ' Â © jÃÆ' Vu where Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; All young do their part in the same session. Then the main vocals by some were replaced by vocals recorded by Stills who remembered: "I substituted one and a half verses that were unbelievably out of tune." Neil Young disagrees, says "The track was magical, and then [Crosby, Stills & Nash] in the nitpicking studio [with the result] Stephen removed the vocals and put the others on the not so good."

The Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; The young version of "Woodstock" peaked at # 11 on Hot 100's Billboard in May 1970 and # 3 in Canada. Different recording "Woodstock" by Crosby, Stills, Nash & amp; Young was played under the closing credits of the documentary film Woodstock released in March 1970.

Matthews Southern Comfort

"Woodstock" became an international hit in 1970 and 1971 through recordings by Matthews Southern Comfort. The group performed "Woodstock" on the Live in Concert program broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 on June 28, 1970 - frontman Iain Matthews will remember that the group needed additional songs for their song on the scheduled radio. sessions, and that the "Woodstock" option was his own suggestion, Matthews had just become familiar with Joni Mitchell's version because he had bought him the Ladies of the Canyon album earlier that week. Due to the positive response to the song, the BBC contacted the label UNews, Union Records. According to Matthews, the label "does not know what [the BBC] is talking about and contacts my management, who asked me about it.The Union suggested we record the song and added it to Matthews Southern Comfort's newly recorded album: 'Later That Same Year. I refuse to disrupt the finished album, but agree to have them release the song as a single. "

According to Matthews, the band's BBC Radio appearance "Woodstock" echoes the original Joni Mitchell: but for their studio recording of the song - made in Willesden Green Morgan Sound's studio - the band radically adjusts the track settings. Matthews will then acknowledge anxiety after finally meeting Joni Mitchell because he has changed the melody - (Ian Matthews quotes :) "I can not reach his high notes" - but Mitchell replied that he prefers the arrangement. Southern Comfort Bassist Matthews Andy Leigh will remember: "We took [songs] apart and rearranged them and we know we have something We are a band album We do not do singles" - in fact the Union has released one single from each. from the first two of Matthews Southern Comfort's three albums - "But we know this [track] ... is something special".

MCA Records - Uni parent company - agrees to release Matthews Southern Comfort version of "Woodstock" only if Crosby Stills Nash & amp; The younger version failed to record in the UK: when it proved to be the case of the MCA (Andy Leigh quotes :) "reluctantly releases our album because of the agreement but they will not spend a cent on promotions ... But our incredible managers hired PR, a songplugger Tony Blackburn, who had a breakfast show on Radio 1, played 'Woodstock' and kept playing it and the other DJs started doing the same. Matthews will remember that once Tony Blackburn made "Woodstock" by Matthews Southern Comfort his record this week, "it started selling 30,000 copies a day, eventually going from # 10 to # 1 in a week."

Released on July 24, 1970, "Woodstock" made its debut in the British Top 50 on September 26, 1970 and reached # 1 on October 31, 1970 which remained there for an additional two weeks: hit # 2 in Ireland, "Woodstock" also had widespread success at European Continent (# 15), Denmark (# 9), Finland (# 23), Germany (# 27), Netherlands (# 17), Norway (# 2), Poland (# 2), and Sweden # 2). In early 1971, the track also reached # 3 in South Africa, # 4 in New Zealand, and was a minor blow in Australia (# 55).

In November 1970 "Woodstock" by Matthews Southern Comfort has released US singles on the US regular label group: MCA affiliate Decca Records. Initially the US single releases only marginal impact, with "Woodstock" by Matthews Southern Comfort spending six weeks on a 101-150 chart single on Record World in December 1970 - January 1971 and then resigned after reaching a peak in # 110. But in "Woodstock" January 1970 single release in Canada - where the 30% Content Canada radio content quota is being phased - the received track is played at least partly because of Canadian authorship, and is assisted by playing on Canadian radio stations with US Listeners - CKLW, Windsor ON station credited with "breakout" Canada - "Woodstock" garnered a renewed US interest, debuting on Billboard Hot 100 dated March 6, 1971 at # 83 to climb to # 23 Hot 100 on the month May. In Canada "Woodstock" peaked at # 5 on the chart RPM 100 singles.

At the time of North America's success of Matthews Southern Comfort "Woodstock", the band no longer exists: the October 1970 shock at MCA Records (UK) has resulted in Matthews Southern Comfort split with MCA - with the results of the US Tour cancellation due to begin in November, month "Woodstock" single US release - and in December 1970 Matthews suddenly stopped. Matthews will link his departure to the incumbent demands on his band's success with "Woodstock": (Ian Matthews quote :) "It creates all the peripheral things that spend my time. What would it be time to learn to be a songwriter , it becomes time spent doing interviews, photos, tours and appearances "; "Everything came to my head after a terrible soundcheck at Birmingham city hall, I left the building, walked to the station, took the train home and locked my door for a week." Matthews's solo debut album If You Saw Thro 'My Eyes is the release of Vertigo Records on May 1, 1971 while his former colleague - Southern Suites - will have three Harvest Records albums before disbanding in 1972.

In the UK, "Woodstock" will be the last single release by Matthews Southern Comfort - which has two UK singing non-charting precedents - and "Woodstock" will remain the sole UK chartings of Matthews: although previous members of Fairport Convention Matthews are not featured in one charting their single: "Si tu dois partir", and Matthews will never rank on the UK charts as a solo artist. In other areas, two more songs were released as singles from Matthews Southern Comfort's third and final album Later That Same Year - outside of the British Isles including Woodstock -Ã: Mare, Take Me Home, and "Tell Me Why" both made Hot Billboard only in # 96 and # 98, while "Mare, Take Me Home" reached # 86 in Canada (Matthews Southern Comfort had a total of four US single releases , after having one non-charting US single: "Colorado Springs Abadi", in April 1970). Iain Matthews - as Ian Matthews - will act solo put three singles on Billboard Hot 100 and also the Canadian charts, one of which: November 1978 release "Shake It", will be a big hit, reaching Billboard Hot 100 peak # 13 in April 1979, also reached # 6 in Canada.

Although there was a problem with the success of "Woodstock" in 1970, Iain Matthews would declare in 2017: "Every kind of success in this business surprised me." Woodstock 'is the first and most exciting It still opens new doors for this day. "
