The water dropworts
Some species are highly toxic, the active poison is oenanthotoxin. The most important of these is the O. crocata ââi>, which lives in moist, marshy, celery-like soils with roots like a bunch of large white carrots. The leaves may be eaten safely by livestock, but the stems, and especially carbohydrate-rich roots are much more toxic. Animals familiar with eating leaf may eat roots when they are exposed during a trench clearance - one root enough to kill a cow, and human death is also known. It has been referred to as the most toxic of all UK plants, and is considered very dangerous because of its similarity to some edible plants.
The species O. javanica , commonly known as Chinese celery or Japanese parsley ( series ; not to be confused with mitsuba or wild Japanese celery, crops of the genus which is different) is edible and is grown in several countries in east Asia, as well as in Italy and India, where spring growth is enjoyed as vegetables.

Name
"Oenanthe " is derived from the Greek oinos "wine" and anthos "flower", from a floral-like scent of flowers.
The name "water dropwort" comes from the close similarity of some smaller species (which mainly grow in wet soil) to the dropwort ( Filipendula vulgaris ) (Rosaceae), unrelated dry grasses.

The sarcastic grin
Scientists at the University of Eastern Piedmont in Italy wrote that they have identified the water droplet hemlock ( Oenanthe crocata âââ ⬠<) as a plant responsible for producing a cynical smile. This plant is the most likely candidate for the "cynical herb", which is a neurotoxic plant used for the murder of a parent ritual in Nuragic Sardinia. When these people can not support themselves, they are drunk with this potion and then fall off the high rock or beaten to death. Criminals are also executed in this way.
Fossil record
Oenanthe aquatica pieces of fossil fruit have been recorded from the Top Miocene of Bulgaria, Pliocene from Thuringia and Pliocene and Pleistocene of Poland.
