"Together Again" was written as a tribute from Jackson to a friend who recently died of AIDS and AIDS victims and their families around the world, as noted in the liner notes of The Velvet Rope (1997). Originally written as a ballad, the track was rearranged as a dance and house song. Jackson is reportedly inspired to write the song from his own personal experience, as well as a piece of fan letter he received from a boy in England who lost his father. According to Jimmy Jam, "it has a deep meaning for him because it is about a friend he lost AIDS, but because with all his songs, he tries to make them apply in a general sense to anyone." The idea is to make it a musically fun song ". The composition of this song was built in 30 minutes by Jam, Lewis, and Jackson while in the recording studio. After the melody was in place, Jackson finished writing the lyrics for the song. The sound of the song was inspired by Donna Summer's "Last Dance" song. Jackson told MTV News that his inspiration for writing "Together Again" was "Runaway" by Nuyorican Soul, because the song reminded him of being in Studio 54 in New York when he was a kid. "Runaway" gives Jackson some sort of New York disco flavor and he wants to do something like this.
