Plot

In 1973, during the Yom Kippur War, the Israeli A-4 Skyhawk jet carrying a nuclear weapon was shot down; 29 years later, a Syrian memo collector reveals an unexploded large bomb buried in a field in the Golan Heights. He sold it to a South African black market merchant named Olson, who recognized it as a nuclear bomb lost during the war. He then sold it to a right-wing group led by Austrian billionaire and neo-Nazi Richard Dressler, who aimed to start a nuclear war between the United States and Russia that would destroy both, and leave European fascism united to govern the world.

CIA analyst Jack Ryan was summoned by CIA Director William Cabot to accompany him to Russia to meet President Nemerov. In Moscow, Cabot and Ryan were allowed to inspect Russian nuclear weapons facilities as determined by the START agreement, in which Ryan saw no three scientists listed on the facility list. Cabot sends John Clark's operative to Russia to investigate. Clark traces missing scientists to former Soviet military facilities in Ukraine, where Cabot suspects they are building a secret nuclear weapon that Russia can use without any means to trace them back to them.

Ryan and his colleagues found that crates from facilities in Ukraine were flown to the Canary Islands, then sent to Baltimore by cargo ship. Ryan warned Cabot, who attended a football match in Baltimore with the President, about a bomb threat. The President was evacuated before the bomb was detonated, but the city was destroyed. To improve the situation, a corrupt Russian Air Force General who had been paid by Dressler sent a Talented Tu-22M Talented to attack the USS John C. Stennis in the North Sea.

Ryan learned from a radiation assessment team that the isotope marks from the nuclear explosion point were manufactured on the Savannah River Site in South Carolina in 1968; evidence that seems to liberate Russia. In Syria, Clark traces Ghazi, one of the men who found the bomb, now dying of radiation exposure. He tells Clark that he sold the bomb to Olson, who lives in Damascus. Ryan's friends at Langley hacked into Olson's computer and downloaded a file involving Dressler as the man who bought plutonium and who was behind the Baltimore attack.

Ryan can reach the National Military Command Center at the Pentagon and deliver a message to Nemerov, saying that he knows that Russia is not behind the attack, while also asking Nemerov to withdraw from his forces as a show of goodwill. Nemerov agreed to do so when President Fowler followed him. Participants in the conspiracy, including Dressler, were killed. President Fowler and Nemerov announced new measures to counter nuclear proliferation in a joint speech at the White House, such as Ryan and his fiancée. Catherine Muller listened.

Production

Development

After the release of the Clear and Present Hazard in 1994, a year was spent developing Tom Clancy The Cardinal of the Kremlin before the material was considered too difficult to adapt, resulting in producer Mace Neufeld purchasing the rights to Clancy's The Sum of All Fears . In October 1999, Harrison Ford announced that Jack Ryan's next novel written in a film would be The Sum of All Fears and that "hopefully we'll get it somewhere where we can make a movie. " During this time, author Akiva Goldsman wrote several draft scripts. However, on June 8, 2000, it was announced that Ford had come out of the movie after he and director Phillip Noyce could not solve the script problem. He then announces that Ben Affleck will take a role in a $ 10 million deal that will see the reboot series with Jack Ryan portrayed at an early stage in life. "On the day I received an offer to play Jack Ryan, I was filming the Pearl Harbor scene with Alec Baldwin. He was very sweet and said I should do it," Affleck said. "I'm not going to do a movie without talking to Harrison Ford first, he's giving me his blessing, that's what I need to hear." Months after Affleck became attached to the project, director Phil Alden Robinson was brought in to lead the project.

Although the plot is essentially the same in movies as in books, there are significant changes. Noting this substantial change, in the comments track on the DVD release, Tom Clancy jokingly introduced himself as "the author of the book that he [director Phil Alden Robinson, who was present with Clancy] ignored."

Perhaps the biggest change is the original terrorists. In this novel, they are Arab nationalists, but in the film, they are transformed into neo-fascists. A common misconception is that this was done in reaction to the September 11, 2001, attacks, but the film finished filming in June 2001.

In addition to "DVD-making", director Alden Robinson says that the change is purely for plot-related elements, because Arab terrorists will not be able to complete everything needed for the story to work. In addition, the terrorists in this book received significant assistance from elements in East Germany, a country that had not existed before the novel was even published. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) conducted a two-year lobbying campaign that ended on January 26, 2001, against the use of "Muslim criminals", like the original book version.

Screenplay writer Dan Pyne claims that the decision not to use Arab terrorists is "probably because it has become a cliche." When I started writing The Sum of All Fears, JÃÆ'¶rg Haider had just started to play Austria, and at the same time, I think, there are some neo-nationalist activities in the Netherlands, and there are things happening in Spain and in Italy so it seems a logical and lasting idea that will become universal. " a greater percentage of profits come from an international audience, and American filmmakers are working to avoid alienating this large segment of this customer base.

Filming

The main photography for The Sum of All Fears started on February 12, 2001 in Montreal, Quebec. The majority of the film was taken in Montreal, including a sequence in football matches that were shot at the city's Olympic Stadium. Additional film making was performed at Diefenbunker in Ottawa, Ontario. Production was completed in June 2001. The aircraft carrier interior scenes were filmed on a set used in the TV series JAG .

Music

The music score for The Sum of All Fears was compiled by Jerry Goldsmith. The soundtrack album was released on June 4, 2002 by Elektra Records. In addition to the Goldsmith score, the soundtrack also includes source music such as "If We Get Through This" by Tabitha Fair and "Nessun dorma" by Giacomo Puccini. There are also two songs from the album ("If We Could Remember" and "The Mission") which is a vocal interpretation of Goldsmith's main theme co-written by singer-songwriter Paul Williams. On March 12, 2014, an expanded edition was released by La-La Land Records.

Release

Theatrical run

While the film is speculated to be released in late 2001, The Sum of All Fears was released theatrically on May 31, 2002. Many of the media that marked this apparent change in release date became a delay due to the September 11 attacks. Overcoming the release date, director Phil Alden Robinson said, "When I joined in August 2000, they said, 'This is a Summer-of-2002 photo.'" As the first film released since Sept. 11 to deal with it very clearly. with terrorism, critics believe it's too worrisome to be released almost nine months after the attack.

Reception

Critical response

The film received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 59% of critics gave a film positive reviews and that the average rating is 6/10 based on a total of 171 counted reviews. The consensus is that the film is "A well-made and well-made thriller that takes on new weight due to the current political climate." At Metacritic, which sets the weighted average of 100 criticisms, the Sum of All Fears received a score of 45 based on 35 reviews.

Peter Travers criticized Affleck's performance, saying "only creates an outline for the role he still has to develop, a role that Harrison Ford has no authority over." Richard Roeper feels the film is "almost impossible to follow - and there's something nervous about seeing the American football stadium nuked as pop entertainment." Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune called it an "unreasonable doom without depth or resonance", while Peter Rainer of New York magazine felt the film had been defeated by the sum of our fears. "

Some positive reviews come from The Argus , which praises Freeman for giving "William Cabot's character like validity." Roger Ebert feels that "the use of neo-Nazis is politically correct: The best way to create criminals who will not offend the audience." He also said that "the one-man action of Jack Ryan in post-war Baltimore is impossible and too timely."

In Reel Power: Hollywood Cinema and American Supremacy, author Matthew Alford observes that the American political character of this film acts well; states, "When the President and his counselors apply that power with a heavy and pure heart as a way of demonstrating 'deterrence' in the hope that this will encourage the Russians to retreat, they never resort to excessive violence and ultimately succeed - with Ryan's help - in avoiding nuclear war. "Further, he argues that" the film celebrates and makes light of the enormous secret power of the globally operated US national security state and its allies. "

According to Box Office Mojo, the film earns $ 118,907,036 and $ 75,014,336 in total foreign, easily recovering $ 68 million in production costs.
