Prism is the fourth studio album by American singer Katy Perry. The album was released by Capitol Records on October 18, 2013. While the album was originally planned to be "darker" than the previous material, Prism eventually became a highly inspired recording by dance. The singer works with some of the past collaborators, when signing up for new producers and guest vocals. Many of Prism revolve around the theme of life in the present, relationships, and self-empowerment. Many critics praise the album's lyrical content as being more "adult" and personal, while others consider Prisma more formulative than previous material.

The album debuted on top of US Billboard 200 with 286,000 copies sold, becoming Perry's best opening week to date. The album also peaked at number one in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. Prism became Perry's fastest selling album, Australia's second best-selling album in 2013, and the second best-selling album released by a woman in the United States in 2013. The International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI) reports that Prism is the world's sixth best-selling album in 2013, the world's best-selling album in 2013 released by a woman, and labeled Perry "a global phenomenon." It has sold over 4 million copies worldwide. The album's success continues throughout 2014, ranking in the top 10 of the annual charts for 2014 in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and earned Perry a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

The release of this album was preceded by the release of two singles. "Roar" was released on August 10, 2013 as the lead single of the album and topped Billboard Hot 100. "Unconditional" debuted on October 16, 2013 as the second single recording. Among the release of these two songs was the release of the promotional single "Dark Horse" on September 17 and "Walking on Air" on September 30, 2013. After completing the California Dreams Tour, Perry stated that he intended to "live a little" before recording any new material that is "worth listening to". When the ex-husband of Russell Brand left him on December 30, 2011, he felt devastated and thought to commit suicide. Perry revealed to Vogue in June 2012 that he plans to record the album "darker" than previous records. He states: "It's inevitable, after what I've been through, if I have a time machine and can go back in time, I'll do it, but I can not, so you'll find another part of me." For Interview , he mentioned that he aspires to include more acoustic vibrations to the record.

Perry also said that his music will get "real dark fucking", although it also states that his fans will be able to link it. "I imagine that maybe my next record will be a little more than an artistic endeavor," he said. "That does not mean I'll sabotage myself and become like, 'I'm going to make a crazy note that no one understands.'" That fall, he then told Billboard about his plans for the album, saying he had imagine some aspects of it. Perry told the magazine that he already had songs and ideas, and knew what kind of recording he would make next. He also said that although he has not started recording, he already knows how the artwork, color and tone of the album will change. Perry is more detailed: "I have to let the music form first.I even know what kind of tour I'm doing next.I'll be very happy if the vision I have in my head comes true but I have to respect the music."

Recording

The development of Prism began when Perry embarked on the California Dreams Tour. He started off with a process that he considered "slow cooking", which consisted of randomly recording "idea fragments" into his cell phone dictaphone app. A member of the Direct Management Group, Ngoc Hoang, then transcribed the audio file, which he put in what Perry described as a "treasure chest"; the object was consulted by Perry later during the album recording sessions. While Perry began recording the album officially in November 2012, accompanied by Greg Wells and Greg Kurstin, he noted that he was still in "dark place", and that he did not "let in light". The session resumed in March 2013, after a trip to Madagascar which Perry had "put his priorities in perspective", leading him to "do more work on himself". Perry also saw a video made by Eckhart Tolle, which discusses the loss. He commented: "When you lose something, all your foundations collapse - but it also leaves a big open hole for something great to go through."

After feeling ready to record again, he reunited with his team from Teenage Dream - Dr. Luke, Bonnie McKee, and Cirkut - in Perry's hometown of Santa Barbara, California, where they spent a month recording at Playback Recording Studio. After the sessions, he went to Stockholm, where he worked with Scandinavian tape recorder Max Martin, to do what Perry calls "laid ice on a cake". He also recruited other collaborators, such as Norway's Stargate team, Bloodshy, Benny Blanco, Jonatha Brooke, and Sia Furler. In April 2013, the recording for the album finished half, and Perry revealed to ASCAP how to work with the collaborator. He asserts that Wells enabled him to "spit words"; with Martin, he chose the melody of the song; Luke mostly leads production and he works with "topline and melody". Perry described the writing session with McKee as "emotional abuse", adding that they were arguing about "best lyrics", as if they were fighting in the boxing ring. McKee, who wrote four songs for Prism, talked to MTV on the effort, describing it as "a little more mature" and "interesting".

Composition

The album opens with "Roar", a synt-driven midtempo pop power song. Musically, it contains elements of rock and glam rock arena, while lyrically it is a song of empowerment. A comparison is made between "Roar" and "Brave" by Sara Bareilles. "Legendary Lovers", a bhangra based song, deals with the concept of karma and infinite. "Birthday" was described by Perry as a self-made attempt to "write something that Mariah Carey would keep on her first note". In music, this is a "subtle" pop song that is mainly laid out in the disco genre. "Walking on Air", the album's second promotional single, is an inspired early-1990s deep-Eurodance-disco song inspired by CeCe Peniston and Crystal Waters. It is produced by Klas ÃÆ'â € | hlund and Max Martin. "Unconditional", Perry's personal favorite song on the second official album and single, is a ballad of "soaring" power with an "epic chorus". Jason Lipshutz of Billboard noted that the song included "woodblock percussion" as well as a "dramatic bass line" and regarded it as the album's "most mature offer". Furthermore, he calls it "a love ode that looks past all the flaws" and declares that the song acts as a "strong grounded predicate" to the title song of Teenage Dream . Perry himself describes the song as a song about unconditional love that can come in all forms, including from relationships, from parent to child, and from sibling to brother.

"Dark Horse" is a song with traps, grime, hip hop, and "rap-techno mashup" genres. This Is How We Do, produced by Max Martin and Klas Ahlund, is portrayed as a possible "summer song" for 2014. Shirley Halperin from The Hollywood Reporter describes "This Is How We Do" as "a brighter 80s decline", while Edna Gundersen of USA Today described it as "pop buoyant buzz with hip-hop underpinnings" and praised the repetitive chorus of the song ("No big deal!"). James Montgomery of MTV News called the song "bandit, club-ready banger". With "Double Rainbow", produced by Greg Kustin and co-writer Sia Furler, Perry was allowed to "let go of the pent-up emotions" and "pull things out of his chest." The song was described as a "massive ballad". Lipshutz considers it a "breathing love song" with "a powerful chorus that explodes on the beat" with lyrics that include "One man's trash is another's treasure/so if it's up to me, I'll take care of you forever". He added that "Kurstin carries the pop sensibility he is presenting with artists such as Kelly Clarkson and P! Nk, while Sia's presence connects this sleek and shimmy pop line to David Guetta's 'Titanium' collaboration. Elia Sarkesian feels that "Some of Katy's best vocals from this album are on this song".

Perry describes "Love Me" as a song "about loving yourself the way you want to be loved". Gundersen called it "irresistibly attractive and energetic". The song is produced by Bloodshy. Sarkesian calls it "an interesting mix - the lyrics are dark, but the music is very centered on dance, at least it will work in clubs." Montgomery stated that both "Love Me" and "International Smile" both "seem destined for the dance floor". The latter was inspired by Perry Mia Moretti's friend, and compared to the songs on Perry's previous album. Lipshutz calls it a "direct pop-rock offer" and describes his guitar link as "kicky", adding that the song also includes "Melting Daft Punk-esque vocoder breakdown". Halperin stated that in the song, Perry sang the phrase "hooky": "Please tighten your seat belt and make sure your champagne glass is empty".

Halperin described "This Moment" and "Ghost" as "the closest mid-tempo ballad in DNA with Perry's previous smashes". Perry stated that he was inspired to write "This Moment" after he heard the audio book The Power of Now ; song lyrics talk about "living in the present"; with Perry "add a romantic spin" to him. Gary Trust describes "Ghosts" as "stunning ballads," while Gundersen describes them as "strong, dark, and haunting". Lipshutz feels that "Ghost" and "By the Grace of God" contain the album "the saddest moments". Speaking of each track, Perry mentioned that "By the Grace of God" was the first song he wrote and recorded for his album in November 2012 when he was in his "dark" phase. Jody Rosen from Vulture described the "Spiritual" bonus track as an inspiring song. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast describes "It Takes Two" as a "sweeping ballad" that allows Perry to "show off a full-throat belt that's so much more bubbly trailer mask". In "Choose Your Battles", Perry "strikes his chest and spews poison in a man he can not understand".
