Starting with the tempo is being followed by an electronic chord arrangement and a "Mum-mum-mum-mah" hook. Chord follow this sequence: G ? mE/G ? -F ? , and then for chorus G ? mEBF ? . The lyrics, "Poker Face" are all about sexual innuendo and ridicule. According to Daily Star , chorus repeats two alternating lyrics. After the hook "Can not read my Poker Face" the backup singer says "He made me like nothing" and then in the next line says "He made me like nothing". Gaga explains in an interview with them that the line brings a bit of confusion over love and sex. However, the liner notes from the album book indicate these two lines are just repeating "he made me like nothing". According to the BBC, the "Mum-mum-mum-mah" hook used in the song refers to Boney M. 1977 hit "Ma Baker".

Once released, "Poker Face" gets critical acclaim. Priya Elan of The Times , in a review for The Fame , said that "Poker Face" is one of the best moments of the album with "love-as-card-game cheek". BBC Music reviews the single "strut-tastic" as "expressing its extraordinary desires for celebrity and luck." Bill Lamb of About.com says, "'Poker Face' works well on pop radio, but with a bit of mixing change, it will be just like home in a dark, sweaty, late night night scene.He has refreshed the pop world in the US. " and the UK at one of the slowest times of the year. 'Poker Face' made the motor hum while everyone waited for the next move from Lady Gaga. Slant Sal Cinquemani Magazine's music magazine includes "Poker Face" among the songs working on The Fame, a song like "Starstruck," "Gangsta Paper" and "Summerboy". Matthew Chisling of Allmusic called the song "contagious" and along with the title song "The Fame", praised them for "rejuvenating the vibrations on the album for the second half." Andy Downing from The Chicago Tribune called the song "jaunty" while reviewing Gaga's Fame Ball tour. In the United States, the song entered Billboard Hot 100 at 92 and reached number six on the March 7, 2009 issue. In Canada, the song debuted at number 41 on the Canadian Hot 100. On the December 13, 2008 chart, "Poker Face" climbed to number one spot and then spent nine consecutive weeks on it. The song is certified eight times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Canada (CRIA) for digital downloads of 320,000. "Poker Face" entered the Australian charts at number 26, and in the seventh week it peaked at number one. The music video for "Poker Face", directed by Ray Kay and assisted by Anthony Mandler, was filmed in a luxury villa in PokerIsland bwin. bwin also provides poker equipment and obtains product placement in return. This video aired on October 22, 2008. It is set by the pool, as well as in a large house. Beginning with Gaga emerging from a pond wearing a mask of a mirror mask and a black sleeveled black late body bodysuit with jagged shoulder pads, with two Great Danes beside it. He throws the mask aside and the song begins with the shots of Gaga's face singing it. Gaga wears a metal sticker on her left cheek in this shot. What is featured in the video is the Gaga scene in a mansion and a dancing pool with dancers in a tricot turquoise. Gaga attends a wild party where every man and woman try their luck in the poker strip game. The party gets wild when all the party guests take off their clothes, dance, and share a kiss. The video also features several white mannequins on the deck of the swimming pool. During a musical interlude before "I will not tell you that I love you" hook, Gaga is featured in "Pop Music Will Never Be Low Brow" sunglasses while sitting by the pool. The video ends with a Gaga head shoot that sings the mom-and-pop song.
Gaga explains in her nineteenth episode "Transmission Gagavision", the main idea behind the "Poker Face" music video. He said that "I know I want to be sexy, so I think there are no pants, because it's sexy, [...] And I know I want it to be futuristic, so I think pads shoulders, because that is my thing." "Poker Face" has been done by Gaga at a number of events including AOL Sessions, Cherrytree House from Interscope Records, as well as MTV sessions. The song was performed by Gaga in the original version and an acoustic piano version on The Fame Ball tour. He plays the piano version in a dress made of transparent plastic bubbles and plays a glass piano with his picture with a shining mannequin, like a music video, standing in front of the stage. On April 1, 2009, the acoustic and normal versions of "Poker Face" are featured live on Fox's American Idol . The show begins with Gaga sitting on a plexiglass piano full of bubbles and bathed in pink light. He began singing the second stanza "Poker Face" in the style of Bette Midler accompanied by a violinist while wearing a shiny aluminum shoulder pad and a bleached blonde whipped wig.
