History

In 1998 or 1999, Japanese mobile operators NTT DoCoMo, au, and SoftBank Mobile each defined their own emoji variants using proprietary standards, first created by NTT DoCoMo employees Shigetaka Kurita.

In 2007, Google, which wished to expand its presence in Japan and Asia as a whole, partnered with au to develop emoji for Gmail, a project codenamed "Mojo". The Gmail design for the emoji poo stack has no face and is encircled on top by flies animation. When deciding which emoji to include, Takeshi Kishimoto, Google's product manager from Google, goes directly to the Gmail manager and assures him that the emoji poo stack is the "most useful" emoji. This is corroborated by statistical analysis conducted by Google to determine which emoji is most popular among Japanese users. According to Google's software engineer Darren Tong, the poo emoji pile is "way up there" in terms of popularity. The design for emoji was handed over to Google Doodle artists, Ryan Germick and Susie Sahim who tried to include "Google spin" on emoji. They are inspired by the emoji design and the Poop-Boy character from Dr. Slump manga by Akira Toriyama. They limit themselves to the size of 15ÃÆ'â € "15 pixels and colors that are only used in the Google logo.

In 2017, emoji "poo frown" was selected to be an inclusion in the upcoming Unicode release. It was added to Unicode in Unicode 6.0, and for Unicode official emoji documentation in 2015.
