Philip David Charles Collins (born January 30, 1951) is a drummer, singer-songwriter, record producer and British actor. He is the drummer and singer of rock band Genesis and also a solo artist. Between 1982 and 1989, Collins scored three England and seven US numbers in his solo career. When his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, as well as his solo career is total, Collins has more than 40 US singles than any other artist during the 1980s. His most successful singles from this period included "In the Air Tonight", "Against All Odds", "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Two Hearts" and "Another Day in Paradise".

Collins began his career as a child actor while at Barbara Speake Stage School and won his first major role as Artful Dodger in London stage production from Oliver! , the musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist . He was an extra in The Beatles' Hard Hard's Night (1964) movie among teenagers screaming during a series of television concerts filmed at Scala Theater in central London. This was followed by a role in Calamity the Cow (1967), produced by the Children's Film Foundation; he appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) as one of the children who invaded the castle, but the scene was cut off. Despite his early acting career, Collins was interested in music. His first record deal came as a drummer for Hickory, with guitarists Ronnie Caryl and Gordon Smith, and keyboardist Brian Chatton. After changing their name to Flaming Youth they recorded the album, Ark 2 , released in October 1969 at Uni Records, which premiered with performances at the London Planetarium. A concept album inspired by the media attention surrounding the 1969 landings, Ark 2 shows each member sharing the main vocals. Despite the commercial failure, he received several positive reviews; Melody Maker renamed it "Pop Album of the Month," describing it as "adult music that is beautifully played with tight harmonization". 1970-1978: Join the Genesis
In the mid-1970s, rock band Genesis advertised "acoustic-sensitive drummer" and "12-acoustic acoustic guitarist" after the departure of drummer John Mayhew and guitarist Anthony Phillips.
