History

The Maiden Street Methodist Church was designed by Foster and Wood architect, and was built between 1866 and 1870. It costs £ 3,500 and is built on Flemish's bond bricks, along with Portland rocks, in Lombardian Roman style. The change was then made in 1955, and a major recovery in 1998-99, when à £ 160,000 was spent on buildings.

In January 2002, the church was the victim of fire, which left her a shell that was destroyed without a roof. The cause of the fire is not specified, but due to the high cost of restoring the building, the local Methodist circuit chooses to build a new church instead. The Weymouth Bay Methodist Church will open in 2009. After the fire, rapid demolition work begins in the interior, the Weymouth & amp; The Portland Borough Council, British Heritage, and structural engineers agree are required to make the building safe. The inside is replaced with a scaffold to support the shell.

Listed on the 'At Risk' list of Heritage UK in 2004, the church was sold in 2006, and sold to a company development project 20 which, in 2007, obtained planning permission to return part of the church and build a new building in its shell. A restaurant is planned for the ground floor, with fifteen residential units located at the higher level. However, no work is commenced and although an extension of the original planning permission was granted in 2010, the site remains undeveloped. The building was sold again in 2016 to private buyers. Although no plans for the church have been revealed, the new owner is in discussions with the English Historian of his future.
