Composition and production

Roger Troutman develops "I Want To Be Your Man" around the theme of romantic commitment. "People have trouble doing and women want us to commit," he explains to authors Adam White and Fred Bronson. "Women want us to admit that we do not want to commit." Troutman took the idea and started working on a song similar to "Computer Love," a 1986 hit for his band, Zapp. "I played in Dallas and [Larry's brother Troutman] flew out, we sat down in the hotel room one day and wrote songs, I talked to him about what I was trying to say and one thing led to the other. We went back and recorded vocals."

"I Want To Be Your People" is a ballad featuring Roger's vocals that are filtered through the vocoder. According to Roger, he never mixed his "humane" sound with the previous talk box, and vocal recording was boring because he could only play one note at a time in the vocoder. To coat the six-part harmony, he uttered the lyrics while playing the melody line and replayed the tape and repeated the process for the harmonization part while playing along with the previously recorded. After he finishes the layering track, if he does not like the result, he should throw it all out and start over. Larry Troutman recommends Nicole Cottom, a friend of his daughter, to help sing the background vocals. Roger remembers he was in the studio one day while he was recording his vocal: "There's a place in the song where there's a hole and I ask him to do something. That's very good, no need to get it out."
