Plot

Carlos Galindo works as a gardener in Los Angeles. His son, Luis, is studying in high school. He spends time with gang members, who surround him. Although Luis did not follow his steps, he studied for education. However, this forces him to become a gang member.

Carlos's younger brother, Anita, borrowed $ 12,000 from a family emergency fund for Carlos to buy a Blasco truck. This was later stolen by Santiago, which Carlos leases. The next day, Carlos and Luis go to the South Central apartment complex, where it is used as a residence for illegal immigrant workers. One person told two people that Santiago was working as a nightclub dishwasher. Carlos and Luis head to the restaurant, which will open at night. At the rodeo, Luis mentioned to Carlos about his mother leaving them. He does not like Mexican music and culture. After finding Santiago in the nightclub, Carlos and Luis interrogate him. They learned that he had sold the truck to the garage and sent the money to his family in El Salvador. Luis gets mad at Carlos for defending the man and leaving the restaurant. The next day, Carlos convinces Luis to have a second chance. When they got the truck, they were arrested by the police.

Carlos was arrested and jailed as one of the illegal immigrants. In prison, Luis reconciled with Carlos. When they promised each other that he was coming back, Carlos boarded the deportation bus. Luis spent time with the family, while Carlos and other illegal immigrants went through the desert.

The film is unusual among Hollywood productions set in the Hispanic community and features almost entirely Hispanic players. Weitz uses films to explore the culture and geography of Los Angeles. Father Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries, run by former gang members, helped Weitz and his crew by locating and making their films as authentic as possible. The writing language was modified to reflect the slang language used in Los Angeles, even reflecting language differences from street to street.
