History

The concept for Smile Direct Club was envisioned by Jordan Katzman and Alex Fenkell. In 2013, they teamed up with David Katzman and Doug Hudson to create SmileDirectClub, a lower-cost alternative to traditional orthodontics. The four initially turned to crowdfunding site, Indiegogo, to secure funding for their venture. According to the company, their service can cost between $1850 to $2170 from start to finish depending on your payment plan. People as young as 12 can be eligible for treatment with SmileDirectClub. The starter kits have been sold through SmileDirectClub's website and The Sharper Image catalog since mid-2014. All of a customer's invisible aligners in their treatment plan are shipped at-once. Smile Direct Club includes bright on(TM) premium teeth whitening gel in their aligner shipments.

Products and services

Customers can get started with Smile Direct Club by getting a 3D scan of their teeth at their local SmileShop, or by purchasing an at-home impression kit. The kit provides resources to create dental impressions and instructions for taking photographs of the teeth and mouth. The impression and photographs are shipped back to the company. A licensed dental professional uses the 3D scan images or the impressions and photographs to build a 3D model of the customer's teeth. These computer images are used to design the desired position as prescribed by the licensed dental professional and overseen by a state-licensed dentist or orthodontist assigned to the customer's case.

Once the treatment is approved, a series of BPA-free clear plastic aligners are custom-made for the customer. These are worn in a specific sequence to gradually move the customer's teeth into the desired position. Customers need to wear their aligners all day and night, except when eating and drinking anything other than water. Aligners are removed for brushing and flossing teeth. The average treatment plan is 6 months. Upon completion of treatment, the customer will need a set of custom-designed retainers to be worn (usually at night) throughout their life to maintain the correction. Throughout the course of the treatment, customers are connected to dental professionals who offer guidance and advice.
